Rabbi Herman L. Cohen

AGE: 81 • East Brunswick

Rabbi Herman L. Cohen, of East Brunswick, passed away early Wednesday, January 20 at the Hebrew Home of Riverdale. He was 81 years old. Born in West Mahoney, PA, he lived in many places including Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; Rochester, NY; Mobile, AL; Jerusalem, Israel; New York, NY; Wheaton, MD; Somerset, NJ; Altoona, PA; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Meriden, CT, and Old Bridge, NJ, before moving to East Brunswick with his wife and their three children 33 years ago.

Rabbi Cohen received his Bachelor's degree from Dalhousie University in 1960, his Rabbinical degree from The Academy for Jewish Religion in 1968, a Masters of Social Work from Yeshiva University in 1982, and a Doctorate of Divinity from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1999.

Before retiring in 2003, he was a Chaplain for Bergen Regional Hospital for 15 years and Rabbi of the Jewish Congregation of Concordia. He served as rabbi to several congregations including ones in Somerset, NJ; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Meriden, CT and Johannesburg, South Africa. Rabbi Cohen was a member of the Rabbinical Assembly.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Rhoda (Rahn) Cohen; his son and daughter-in-law Neil and Sherry Cohen of Riverdale, NY; his daughter and son-in-law Rina and Dan Schwarz of New York, NY; his daughter and son-in-law Dr. Nadine Cohen and Dr. Steve Dickstein of Yonkers, NY; his brother and sister-in-law Aaron and Natalie Cohen of Teaneck, NJ; and his six beloved grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, January 21st at the East Brunswick Jewish Center, 511 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick, NJ. Interment followed at Baron Hirsch Cemetery in Staten Island. Arrangementsr were by Crabiel Funeral Home in Milltown. Shiva will begin at the home of Rhoda Cohen in East Brunswick, NJ following the burial. You may offer the family condolences at www.crabiel.com. Contributions may be made in Rabbi Cohen's memory to The Good People Fund or Young Judaea Year Course.

Rabbi Cohen was a kind person; a devoted Jew and Zionist; a friend and colleague from the Maritimes. He will be missed. May his Nashama have an Aliyah. May the almighty console his wife, Rhoda, children, grandchildren.
