James V. Pickering, Sr.

AGE: 89 • Hudson, FL, formerly of New Brunswick

James Vincent Pickering, Sr., 89, of Hudson, FL and formerly of New Brunswick, died Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at his home.

Born and raised in New Brunswick, Jim settled in Florida in 1977. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII as an air traffic controller. Afterwards, Jim spent 10 years on the New Brunswick Police Department before transferring to the Rutgers University Police Department in New Brunswick, where he retired as a captain in 1974 after 22 years of service. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 400 in Hudson, Fl. He was a competitive shooter for many years in the former Central Jersey Police Pistol League. He enjoyed camping with his children when they were growing up, and he was an avid hunter and fresh water fisherman. He was also an accomplished woodworker, furniture maker and cook.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Grace (Matts) Pickering of Hudson; his children, MaryJane Bielen and her husband Robert of East Brunswick, Joanne Laposa and her partner Ronald Putek of Fairfax, VA, Grace Fryzowicz and her husband Travis of Spotswood, James V. Pickering, Jr. and his wife Karen of North Brunswick and, Dennis Pickering and his wife Ellen of Gainesville, FL; his grandchildren, Michael J. and Robert V. Bielen, Tracie Smith, Travis E. Fryzowicz, Amy Miller, Tara Laposa, Marcy Fisher, Katebryn Henao and Carl J., James B., Dennis M., Jr., Joseph J. and Patrick N. Pickering, and; eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM from Spotswood Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Spotswood, followed by a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial from Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Interment will be in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
