John Bognar Obituary
North Brunswick
John Bognar of North Brunswick passed away at his home on Saturday,August 27, 2011. He was born on August 29, 1938 in Budapest, Hungary. In 1956, at the age of 18, he made a courageous decision to escape from Communist rule and seek a new life in the United States.
John attended New Brunswick Vo-Tech high school where he studied drafting and then received a degree from DeVry Institute of Technology.
John proudly served in the United States Army. When he completed his service, he returned to his job at Westinghouse, then was employed at Burroughs, and later worked as a senior quality assurance technician for ITT. A resident of New Brunswick and then North Brunswick, John was a long-time member of St. Ladislaus Roman Catholic Church and also a member of the Hungarian American Athletic Club.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Irene Bognar, his daughter Irene Kato of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and his son John A. Bognar of East Brunswick, NJ, and four grandchildren: John and Julia Bognar and Grace and Eve Kato. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Jim Hance, Susan and Rick Chamblee, sister-in-law Maria Bognar, brother-in-law Laszlo Korenchy, son-in-law Naohiro Kato, daughter-in-law Jennifer Bognar, as well as nieces and nephews in the United States and Hungary.
John was proud to be an American and committed to making a life in his chosen country. He was a hard working and loving husband and father who was devoted to his family. Known for his uncanny ability to repair and build anything with his hands, John was particularly well known for sharing his skills with his friends and family when they were in need.
He possessed an incredible zest for life, a passion for meaningful conversation, and was always ready to brighten anyone's day with a funny story or joke. He loved children. His own children and grandchildren were a source of great joy for him and provided inspiration for all that he did in life.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 7:00 - 9:00pm at Gowen Funeral Home, 239 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am, September 1, at St. Ladislaus Church, 215 Somerset Street, also in New Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice.

Dear Irene, Irene and John: so sorry to hear the news about John. What great summers we all had, back in the (gasp!) 80s, going to the Cosmos games, and watching them on tv. My thoughts are with you all, so sad for your loss.

Dear Bognar Family: I have so many memories of "Mr. Bognar" and although he insisted that I call him "John", I could never bring myself to do that. In my thoughts he was first and foremost a father-figure, as well as gracious host.
When I went through a divorce in 2006, Mr. Bognar was a kind and compassionate father-figure who instinctively knew the right things to say to me, and for that I am grateful. I feel that today there is one more angel looking at us from heaven, supporting us, guiding us, loving us.
