Richard Fulham Obituary

Richard Fulham

AGE: 80 • Toms River

Richard Francis Fulham, 80, of Toms River, NJ, died on September 17, 2012, after a lifetime of service. Born on April 25, 1932, in New Brunswick, NJ, he resided in South River, NJ, and Toms River, NJ, for most of his life.

Rich served in the Army from 1950-1953 as a sergeant with the 3rd Infantry Division. He fought in the Korean War from 1950-51, earning a Bronze Star and New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal.

After serving his country in the Army, he returned to his hometown of South River, NJ, to serve his community - volunteering as a member of the South River Fire Department and Rescue Squad. After working for a short time at DuPont, he became a South River Police Officer, rising through the ranks and retiring in 1988 as Captain.

Never one to sit still, Rich "unretired" in 1989 and began a second career working as an Agent for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office in Toms River, where he moved in 1990. He served four County Prosecutors as a member of the Traffic Bureau, the Fatal Accident Unit and the Community Relations office. Rich also served as a Security Officer for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He was awarded the Silver Star for Bravery from the American Police Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the American Legion, VFW and State PBA.

Predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Mary Fulham; and a brother, Patrick, Rich is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Cynthia Polgar Doll Fulham; two sisters, Marion Rebeck (Bob) and Joan Zuczek; four daughters, Susan Crater (Billy), Bonnie Fulham (Mariann), Kathleen Agheli (Modjy) and Diane Blaszka (Rob); and two stepsons, William Doll (Dorisann) and Kevin Doll (Coretta). He was the beloved grandfather of nine: Richard Fulham; Gavin and Brandon Blaszka; Chase Agheli; Katie Crater; William, Joshua and Marley Doll; and Chandler Jackson. He was the cherished uncle of Patricia Bendorf (Craig), Sharon Witkowski (James), Beth Ann Zuczek Coffman (Glenn), and a warmly loved and respected friend and family member to many.

Richard will be well remembered for his desire to serve and help his fellow man, as well as his kind heart.

A private ceremony was held for family through Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals in Toms River. Donations or volunteer services in Rich's memory are encouraged to the organization of your choice.

I love and miss you Bub. I spent last evening going through some boxes of your stuff with both boys, reading from sweet and inspiring letters you wrote us, news articles about your successes, and showing them pics from all our happy times. They need to know the strong and sweet blood they carry. xoxo Lady Di

The name Rich certainly fitted your Dad. Rich in love for his beautiful daughters and family. Rich in pride for his grandchildren & their accomplishments. Rich in friendship to all his dear friends. Rich in faithful, dedicated service to his community. May your Dad rest in peace. Though those left behind mourn his passing, they rejoice in knowing that he is free from his earthly pain and rejoicing in the presence of his Savior. Much love always.

As a kid growing up on Frandsen Avenue I always felt a little safer knowing Mr. Fulham lived up the street. As an adult, I have always felt a little safer because of the lessons from that same man. The Frandsen Avenue Angels have a new member. I imagine my dad saw him and said, "Richie, Welcome to the club, it's good to see you!"

Dear Fulham Family,

Rich was a patient/friend of mine for many, many years! He was so kind! We talked often about the PBA and when he was on the force. When I met my husband, who also worked down town and was in the PBA,he made sure to be at my wedding even though it was during a hurricane.I will miss you Rich. Rest in peace my friend. My heart goes out to you Cynthia, just know he touched so many lives and he brought a smile to every one of them.

Dad,
Billy, your Katie D, and I were so blessed to have spent your last day here on Earth with you. You remained loving, compassionate, and kind even though you were tired and in pain. Little did I know that we were holding hands for the last time. Jesus blessed us by being together that day and letting you rise to him peacefully that night. Your kind heart went to sleep and then to heaven peacefully. I know your Mother greated you there and you are safe in your new home above. Rest My Dear Dad with the love of God around you.
Love, Susie Movie Star

Dad, You left us with so many pearls of wisdom. "You are who you walk with," Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time," "Forgive and forget," "Never say or do anything wrong to make a friend, or do keep one," "Honesty is courage," and, finally, "A father holds his daughters' hands for a short time, but their hearts forever." How very, very, very true dad. You will forever live in our hearts and souls. I love and thank you for all you did and all you were Bub. Diane
