Shirley Nelson Obituary
AGE: 85 • Monroe Township
Shirley M. (Kern) Nelson died Sunday, October 30, 2016 at her home in Monroe Township surrounded by her family. She was 85.
Born in New Brunswick she lived in North Brunswick before moving to Monroe 28 years ago. She graduated from Middlesex General Hospital School of Nursing (now Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital) in New Brunswick and worked as a registered nurse there and at JFK Medical Center in Edison before retiring in 1986. After retirement she continued to be a dedicated caregiver.
She was an avid golfer and belonged to the Clearbrook Golf Association. She also had a passion for knitting and loved to travel with her family and grandchildren.
Her husband of 63 years, Ronald M. Nelson, died in 2015. Surviving are her son Ronald Nelson Jr. and his wife Judy of East Brunswick; four daughters - Cheryl Wilson and her husband Robert of Woodbridge, Diane Hetzler and her husband Thomas of Howell, Michigan, Lynn Scott and her husband Steve of Ashburnham, Massachusetts and Joyce Chedid and her husband Amine of Hillsborough; fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Burial will follow in Washington Monumental Cemetery in South River. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
