COURTDALE — Robert J. Rhoads, of White Rock Terrace, Courtdale, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born April 15, 1943, in Reading, he was a son of the late John and Margaret Coley Rhoads. Moving to Wilkes-Barre, he attended local grade schools and was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School.
Bob was a U.S Army veteran during the Vietnam era serving from 1962 to 1965, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as the produce manager by the former Acme Warehouse located on Welles Street, Forty Fort. Bob was a member of St. Ignatius Parish, Kingston, and belonged to the Holy Name Society.
He was a member of Lodge No. 61 F & AM; the Shekinah Royal Arch, Chapter No. 182; the Dieu Le Veut Commandery No. 45 and the Mount Horeb Council No. 34, R & SM. Bob belonged to Irem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Wilkes-Barre, the Shrine Club of Great Wilkes-Barre and was a member of the Oriental Band, where he held the office of treasurer. For many years, he provided the publicity for the annual Irem Temple Shrine Circus held at the Wilkes-Barre Armory. Mr. Rhoads was a member of the American Legion Post 558, Plains Township; the Disabled American Veterans, Post 59, and the North End Slovak Citizens Club, both of Wilkes-Barre.
Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Callan Rhoads, a brother, Richard, and his wife, Kathy, Ellicott City, Md.; a sister-in-law, Sister Mary Alicia Callan S.C.C., Mendham, N.J.; his godparents, Joseph and Josephine Mamola, Wilkes-Barre; numerous cousins and friends.
The funeral for Mr. Rhoads will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the Hugh P. Boyle & Son Funeral Home Inc., 416 Wyoming Ave., Kingston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, with the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetary, Pringle. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family, 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Hugh P. Boyle & Son Funeral Home Inc.
Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to Irem Shriners, 64 Ridgeway Drive, Dallas, PA 18612.
