After graduating from high school, he attended Western Illinois University and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Industrial Arts with an emphasis in education.
Dennis was an Industrial Arts teacher at Turner Jr. High in Jacksonville, for 31 years from 1970 to 2001. He also owned Heitz Construction while in Jacksonville.
