Sara Haney Obituary

Sara "Sally" Davidson Haney, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Spofford, NH on January 25, 2025. Sally was born in Scarsdale, NY and was the daughter of the late Richard W. Davidson and Kathleen S. Davidson. Sally is survived by her two sons: John R. Haney, his wife Carol and Jeffrey W. Haney, his wife Christine, and her four grandchildren: Sara; Richard, his wife Caroline; William; and Sabrina. Sally grew up in North Haven, CT and graduated in 1957 with a degree in developmental psychology from Hood College in Frederick, MD. Her adventurous nature led her to live in Marseille, France and Denver, CO, before settling in Storrs, CT, to raise her two sons. When her sons left home, Sally moved to Brattleboro, VT before finally settling on Spofford Lake. A lifelong learner and teacher, Sally devoted her life to raising her sons and teaching riding. Her love for all things equestrian encompassed many disciplines, including hunter-jumper and dressage, but she found her true calling in Centered Riding, a method focused on the rider's center and balance to guide their horse. As a dedicated Centered Riding instructor, Sally achieved the rank of Level IV Instructor and served as secretary and chairman of the Centered Riding, Inc Organization. She traveled extensively across the United States and Europe, conducting instructor clinics and sharing her expertise. Her holistic approach to life led Sally to also become an Alexander Technique instructor and a level II Reiki guide. Beyond teaching competitive riding, Sally taught and volunteered in several therapeutic riding programs, including at Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, VT, where she brought the healing power of horses to individuals with injuries or disabilities and to at-risk youth. An active individual and animal lover throughout her life, Sally adored her beloved Jack Russell terriers (Lolly, Biscuit, Alfie, Callie) and her horses (Scout, Tango, Charmere, Actuel, Poetas). She also enjoyed birding, gardening, skiing, and many other outdoor activities. Her vibrant spirit and passion for life left an indelible mark on all who knew Sally. May her memory be a blessing and continue to inspire all who share her passions. Our heartfelt thanks to Sky and the Caregivers of Trusted Choice Eldercare for their devotion to Sally. A service to honor Sally's life will be held at Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Saturday, February 1, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Kurn Hattin Homes. I remember 'Sally' from the era when we both were spending time at Southmowing Stables in Guilford, VT (just up the road a bit from her home in West Brattleboro). An era filled with very good memories.
