Merle Mooney Obituary

Merle Myers Brotherton Mooney LOCKNEY - Merle Myers Brotherton Mooney died on July 22, 2013, at Mangold Memorial Hospital in Lockney. Merle lived a full and gracious life serving the Lord, her community, her family and her many friends. With a zest for life, Merle loved to sew and cook, and enjoyed entertaining and playing bridge. She will be remembered for her faith, her values, her friendliness, her love of family and friends, and always remembering someone with her beautifully handwritten notes and cards. Services to celebrate Merle's life were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in Lockney. Interment at the Lockney Cemetery followed. Merle was born on Nov. 14, 1920, to Herbert Ray and Olive Blanche Myers in Lockney. She graduated from Lockney High School in 1939. Upon receiving a generous scholarship, Merle went on to West Texas State University, graduating in 1944 with a degree in education. She later went on to Texas Women's University and earned a master's degree in library science. She married Charles B. (Ben) Brotherton in August 1944, and they had three children, Robert Charles, Deborah Kay and David Branson. On May 31, 1975, Merle married C.L. (Mike) Mooney, and they were married for 35 years until Mike's death in 2010. Merle leaves behind a loving family to cherish her memory, her son, Bob Brotherton and wife Lydia of Folsom, Calif.; daughter, Debby Threadgill of Kerrville, Texas; son, David Brotherton and his wife Kay of Floydada; stepdaughter, Diane and her husband Wyatt Phillips of Childress; stepdaughter, Debby and her husband Dave of Pooleville, Texas; stepson, Pat Mooney and his wife Ann of Avon, Ind.; sister, Kay McPherson of Palestine, Texas; brother Jimmy Myers and his wife Ernestine of Houston, Texas; and dear friend, Wallace Allen of Welch, Okla. She also leaves 11 precious grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and friends. She was pre-deceased by her husband Mike; her children's father Ben; brothers Don and Jackie Myers; and sister Betty Veal. Merle was a teacher, then librarian, at Lockney High School for more than 20 years. Throughout her career in education, she taught a variety of subjects including home economics, English and typing. Merle took great pride in her work, guiding her students through their high school years and is fondly remembered by many as a strong and influential teacher. Merle was a loyal member of the Lockney's First United Methodist Church where she gave her time and talent in every way possible. She was actively involved in her community as a steadfast supporter of the Lockney Care Center and a dedicated member of United Methodist Women and Business and Professional Women's Association. Our family would like to thank the wonderful friends, neighbors and caregivers that we so appreciate for adding to the quality of Merle's life while allowing her to maintain independence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Lockney and Lockney Senior Citizens.
