Michael Lintner Obituary

All the doughnuts have been made...and he now can go home and sleep.

Michael Holly Lintner, 80, Rensselaer, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Jan. 6, 2025, at Franciscan Hospital in Lafayette.

Mike was born on June 30, 1944, in Rensselaer, to the late John R. Lintner and the late Madelene (Sayler) Lintner Speaks.

As a child, he contracted and luckily recovered from polio. Throughout his youth, he loved playing football, basketball and baseball. At 16, he started washing pans at his brother's bakery, Daryl's Pastry Shop. Later, he became the doughnut man, frying up to 120 dozen doughnuts a day beginning at 1 a.m. He had an amazing work ethic and worked at the bakery for 42 years.

Mike served in the US Army from 1966 – 1967, receiving basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. He then spent 18 months stationed in Neckarsulm, Germany, where he was assigned to provide travel pay and payroll service for his company.

He was a fan of Elvis, oldies music, movies, TV series, game shows, and classic cars. Mike once held the world record score for the Dr. Mario video game, but no one knew it. He was liked by everyone he met. When the Chicago Bears practiced at St. Joe's all of the players would go out of their way to visit him and his brothers at the bakery, including Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers!

He is survived by his best friend and twin sister, Joan Witherington, who fondly visited him nearly daily for several years. Aunt Joanie encouraged Mike to obtain a GED in his later years, and he was proud of the accomplishment. He is also survived by his children, Jim (Karen) Lintner, Michelle (Bob) Taxhet, Martin (Tab) Lintner, Lisa (Nick) Lintner Valenzuela, and Jason (Pami) Lintner; sisters, Sandra Schauer and Shirley Martinbianco; brothers, Larry O. (Betty) Lintner and Ronald (Betty) Lintner; and 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marcella J. Lintner; sons, Robert and Thomas Lintner; granddaughter, Kaylee Lintner; sisters, Beverly Wineno and Lillian Anderson; and brothers, John and Daryl Lintner.

The family would like to give special thanks to his son, Marty, whose unwavering devotion to his father during the past few years was a true testament to extraordinary love.

When the world warms up again, a celebration of life will be held at the First Christian Church in Rensselaer on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m.

Daryl´s Pastry Shop was a Rensselaer GEM.
This man with his incredible love & work ethic...was it´s heartbeat.
I´m left to wonder how many doughnuts he must have made in his entire career there and how many smiles were created as a result of them. I doubt a calculator could handle it...

Not so many years ago, upon a visit to town, I stopped to check in on Mike; as always he was friendly & hospitable, and we sat and caught up on his front porch for a while.
I confessed to him that ever since I first met him, he reminded me of Harry Blackstone, the magician.
He got a good chuckle out of that.
Bless you Mr. Lintner.
And bless the Lintner Family.

Your friend,
-Brad K.
