Harriet Gibson Obituary

Ms. Harriet Tennent Gibson
September 1, 1919 - October 20, 2012
Georgetown
Today, we celebrate the life of Ms. Harriet T. Gibson, who, at the age of 93, passed away peacefully Saturday morning with family by her side. Born September 1, 1919, to the late Mr. & Mrs. Bentley Gordon & Mary Delgar Gibson, Harriet spent her childhood in Sumter & Charleston before the family made their home in Bennettsville, SC. A graduate of Bennettsville High School, Harriet moved to Washington DC during WWII and worked in the State Department. After the war, she moved back to Bennettsville to assist her mother and lived there the majority of her life. In 2010 Harriet moved to Cherry Grove to be near family and then to Georgetown in March of 2011, where she resided with best of care at the Georgetown Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Known as the "Lady at the Library," "Ms. Harriet" worked at the Marlboro County Library, where, after 32 years, she retired in 1989. Honored by the State of South Carolina for her dedicated service, on March 21, 2010, Harriet was presented a plaque by State Dignitaries, which was installed at the CIRCULATION DESK in the new Marlboro County Library. The plaque welcomes all visitors just as Harriet's contagious smile and a laughter did all those years and reads "You may see a room with shelves and books, but it's far more magical than it looks. In Honor of Ms. Harriet Gibson"
While in Bennetsville, Harriet was actively involved in her community and church, St. Paul Episcopal Church. In both pre and post retirement, Harriet was an avid photographer with camera, film and flash always by her side. In later years, she became a Historian, for family, friends and community and donated many photographs of historical nature to the city of Bennettsville.
Ms. Gibson was preceded in death by her parents, Bentley & Mary Gibson and brothers Robert Gibson & William D. Gibson. She is survived by brothers Bentley Gibson Jr., (wife Lib) of Palatka, FL, Edward T. Gibson, (wife Mary Anne) of Greenville, SC, Frank E. Gibson, (wife Marean) of Murrells Inlet, SC, sister-in-law Mrs. William D. Gibson (Jean) of Cherry Grove, SC and her niece & nephews, grand nephews and great grand nephews, whom she adored.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 26th at 10:00am - St. Stephens Episcopal Church in North Myrtle Beach, with reception following. Graveside service and burial will be held at 2:00pm - Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville, SC. Viewing will be held Oct. 25th from 4 - 6 pm, Thursday at Lee Funeral Home in Little River, SC. In lieu of flowers, Ms. Gibson and family request that memorials be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, (801 11th Ave. North - NMB, SC 29582), which will aid in Community Outreach Programs.
