Jane Jacobsen Obituary

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. | Jane Greer Jacobsen, 1916 - 2009, passed away.

She was the wife of the late U.S. Navy Commander Conrad Leiknes Jacobsen.

Born in San Francisco, California, she was the daughter of the late Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Col. Allen James and Dorothy E. Hersey Greer.

Jane received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1937, a master's in Art History at the University of California at Berkley in 1939 and a master's in Education at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn., in 1949.

During her early childhood, Jane joined her mother, grandmother, brother and other staunch supporters of the Women's Suffragette movement in the Washington, D.C., marches in the early 1920s. She later became an accomplished equestrienne and sharpshooter. Jane was a member of the U.S. Women Swim Team for the 1932 Olympics.

While raising her family during the 50s and 60s Jane was an active participant in the Clandestine Civil Rights movement in the lowlands of South Carolina, where she coordinated local efforts in support of NAACP and CORE activities at the national level.

For many years, Jane taught in the Myrtle Beach public school system, where she is still fondly remembered as ''Miz J.'' She also taught in Harlem, New York City, and was a speech therapist volunteer for several years at various Native American reservations in the Los Angeles region.

Jane is survived by her two daughters, Caroline L. Jacobsen Starita of North Chelmsford, Mass., and Ciri L. Jacobsen Malamud of Glen Ridge, N.J.; six grandchildren, Edith I. G. Chapman, Vittorio I. Starita, Caroline J. S. Enos, Gianpaolo Starita, Rachel I. M. Alembakis, and Deborah L. Malamud. At the time of her death, Jane had 11 great-grandchildren.

Jane was the mother of the late Conrad Allen Jacobsen.

It was an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to meet and know this fantastic personality. I finally know the source of some of the characteristics I have been gifted with as well as the strength of spirit I am often surprised by.

Data, you were such a blessing in my life; I will always think fondly of our adventures, smile at the memories, and miss you sharply every day until we meet again. Save me a space...Until then, I'll continue to look for you in the sunrises and sunsets. Lovingly, Ede

Mrs Jane Greer Jacobsen is the mother of one of my dearest, most beloved friends, Caroline Jacobsen Starita. I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Jane and sharing some fun moments in her long, amazing life. She was a remarkable woman and an inspirational individual. Human beings of her caliber are rare and should be cherished. Knowing someone like her not only enhances the lives of those aound her, but it encourages us to strive to do more with our talents and our resources. She touched so many lives in such a positive way. And I recognize her genious, personal integrity, courage, fabulous sense of humor, and keen sense of irony in her older daughter and my friend, Caroline. God bless Jane and her family. Her legacy lives on in them, and if you've met her incredible daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jane has so much of which to be proud. No doubt she is now on the other side of the veil regaling them with her stories. Her life was one long amazing adventure. It was a life very well lived. Blessings to her, as she is now reunited with her beloved husband and son. And her little Boston terrior, Dotty, who, like Jane, was quite a character, too.

To the friends and family of Jane Jacobsen,
As a close friend of Caroline Starita Enos, I often heard about this grandmother; her struggles health-wise and the love Caroline has for this grandmother. She will be missed. What an incredible life she has lead!
