Jean Brittain Obituary

Jean Casey Brittain
February 13, 1928-February 7, 2018
Myrtle Beach, SC
Jean Casey Brittain made her triumphant entry into heaven on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. She was born on February 13, 1928 in Inman S.C., the youngest child of Oliver Riley and Julia Metalf Casey. She married her childhood sweetheart, Rev. Thomas N. Brittain, on July 2, 1947 at Inman Methodist Church. She and her husband celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past July.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Thomas Casey Brittain (Kathy) of Myrtle Beach S.C. and her daughter, Jan Brittain (Cecil Donahue) of Mooresville N.C., by four loving grandchildren, their spouses and six great grandchildren. Thomas Casey Brittain, Jr. (Yvonne, Anna Kate and Walker), Andrew Preston Brittain (Elizabeth, Dunbar and Magnus), Mary Madison Brittain Langway (Drew, Lilly and Andrew) of Myrtle Beach S.C. and Riley Brittain Donahue (Jenica) of Brooklyn NY. Her children, grandchildren and great grands were the delight of her life and they all "rise up and call her blessed."
She was predeceased by her seven siblings: Roy, Blease, Alice, Hugh (Bub), Neill, Dan and Billy (who gave his life for America in WWII) and by one beloved grandchild Thomas Wade Donahue.
She graduated from Inman High School in 1945, having spent her childhood and youth in the years of the depression and World War II. She graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College and attended Limestone College in Gaffney.
She lived in Atlanta Ga. while her husband attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University, teaching school in Dallas and Decatur Ga. After returning to S.C. she continued to work in the schools as a substitute, both short and long term.
But her main responsibility and her chosen work revolved around her two roles as Pastor's wife and mother. She thought of herself as the pastor's helper and made a tremendous difference in the lives of people who were part of the churches her husband served across S.C. She always taught Sunday School (Usually 5th graders), often sang in the choir, served on various committees, prepared countless casseroles, loved being part of the United Methodist Women with their focus on Mission and was a tireless prayer warrior. Her place on the second pew of every congregation was a comfort and encouragement to family and friend alike. Jean added her style and warmth to parsonages across the state, turning each of them into beloved homes for her family and a place of hospitality for all. She supported her children in every aspect of their lives, attending countless football and basketball games, concerts and plays, giving support and aid to their families throughout the years.
She also loved to travel, to see new places, visit beautiful and historic sites and meet new people. The little girl from Inman S.C. traveled to all 50 states, 36 countries, half a dozen islands and four continents. To God be the Glory.
The family will receive friends at McMillan Funeral Home (910 67th Ave N, Myrtle Beach) on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM. The family will be at 1003 Louise Drive (Tommy's House) on Friday afternoon.
Friend and family will gather to celebrate this life of faith, hope and love and give thanks for the promise of a shared eternity at First United Methodist Church, Myrtle Beach on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 3:00pm.
Memorials may be made to: The Children's Ministry at the church of your choice or

My sincere sympathy to Tom and all the family. Have special memories of Jean. Our church ( Calvary UMC at Swansea, SC was their first charge). My husband and I was also a young married couple at that time and enjoyed Jean and Tom and was so thankful to have these two wonderful people to share their faith with us.

Such great memories of Jean and 'Big Tom' while we were part of First Methodist in Myrtle Beach. I'm thankful that they continued to remember us on occasion with prayer cards when they pulled our names from the 'bowl.' Our sincere condolences to all the family. We love you all.
