Joan Quinn Obituary

COLUMBIA | Our Mother, Joan McDonald Slaughter Quinn, died peacefully Thursday, June 19, 2008, after a well-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Mullins, South Carolina, she was the second child and only daughter of Gertrude and Wilbur Slaughter. Upon graduation from Mullins High School, she moved to Columbia to attend Columbia College. She majored in early childhood education, and following graduation married Tim Quinn of Loris. She supported him through Law School by teaching at Logan Elementary School. As their family grew, she stayed at home to raise their five children. In her later life she embarked upon a career in retail, opening Angelic. Her proudest accomplishment during this time was the work that she and her dear friend, Kathy Davis, accomplished via their store, Angelic Works. She became an active participant in Children's Chance, a charity dedicated to the needs of seriously ill children. Her final months were spent as the manager of the Providence Hospital gift shop, a position which allowed her to establish a number of very meaningful friendships.

She was preceded in death by her mother, our Nanny, Gertrude McDonald Slaughter. She will be dearly missed by her father, Wilbur Slaughter of Columbia; her brother, Willis Slaughter and his wife, Pam, of Colonial Beach, Va., who provided such compassionate care for her throughout her illness; and her children,Ty Quinn and his wife, Charmen, of Mount Pleasant, Ashley Quinn Drake and her husband, John, of Decatur, Ga., Allison Quinn Cooper and her husband, Timmy, of Murrells Inlet, Natalie Joan Quinn and her husband, Daniel Hall, of Columbia, and Bryan of Columbia. She also leaves eight grandchildren of whom she was so proud.

We would like to give special thanks to the wonderful nursing staff on the 8th floor of Palmetto Health Baptist Medical Center (especially Jin, Patty, Sherry, Keysha and Vince), Dr. Kaura Pridgen, Dorothy Williamson, Betty Addison, Kathy Davis, and Libby Hall, and her many friends who visited with her in the hospital.

Visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 3 until 5 p.m., Saturday, June 21, June 2008. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2008 in Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, with a graveside service to follow in Cedardale Cemetery, Mullins.
