John Ramsbottom Obituary

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH | Dr. John Garnett Ramsbottom Sr., 88, died Sunday, December 23, 2007 at his residence.

He was born December 01, 1919 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, a son of the late John Garnett and Esther Nichols Ramsbottom.

He graduated from Wofford College in 1940, Duke Medical School in 1943 and served his internship at Queens General Hospital in New York City in 1944. From 1945-1947, he served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Core during World War II. Dr. Ramsbottom served his OB-GYN residency at Durham General Hospital from 1947-1948. He was in private practice in Spartanburg from 1948-1975 and in North Myrtle Beach from 1975-2001.

He was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice and a fellow of the AAFP, as well as a past member of the Spartanburg County and Horry County Medical Society. He was also a member of the Spartanburg Country Club and the Surf Golf and Beach Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Louise S. Ramsbottom; his two sons, Dr. John Garnett Ramsbottom Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Myrtle Beach and James Nichols Ramsbottom and his wife, Patrice, of Austin, Texas; his sister, Eileen R. Nolen of Spartanburg; and his grandchildren, Nancy R. Mudd and her husband, F.D., of La Plata, Md., Dr. John Garnett Ramsbottom III, DMD and his wife, Kathy, of Charlotte, N.C. and Berkeley Patrice Ramsbottom of Austin, Texas.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in the Heritage Chapel Mausoleum in Spartanburg.

Friends may call at the home of Dr. Ramsbottom.

His family would like to give special thanks to his caretakers, Dr. Bee Mabeline Evans and Doretha Randall, to his housekeeper of 47 years, Elizabeth Franks, as well as to Lyda Vereen, office manager and to the staff of North Myrtle Beach Family Practice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, 410-6th Ave S., North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 or to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.

Mrs.Ramsbottom, Garnett and Jim..our condolences on your loss.
"Doc" was our family doctor for years in Spartanburg, and our son, John Paul, was the last baby he delivered almost 38 years ago. He and my Daddy, John Sammons, were friends for many years and enjoyed boating and fishing together. Such wonderful memories for all of us. God Bless you at this time in your lives.

My mother, Daisy Robbins was a patient of Dr Ramsbottom while she lived in Spartanburg and she, as everyone did, thought very highly of him. Mother died at the age of 89 in Sept 2007 in California.
