Terrell Covington Obituary

Terrell Gordon Covington
RUSKIN, FL
Terrell Gordon Covington died on September 7, 2012, after a brief illness. He was 72. He was born in Montgomery Alabama, on July 22, 1940, to Benjamin W. Covington, Jr., and Nona Musgrove Covington.
Mr. Covington, a 1964 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, started his service as an enlisted soldier in the 187th Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division. He served in combat in the Dominican Republic as a member of the 2/505th Airborne Infantry followed by multiple tours as a ground combat advisor in Vietnam, at one point having accumulated more combat time than anyone in his class. For these actions, he was awarded three Bronze stars including one for Valor, three Air Medals and the Combat Infantry Badge. Upon his return from Vietnam, he commanded an Infantry training company at Fort Jackson and attended Georgia Tech University where he completed studies in Operations Research and Systems Engineering and began a life long love of golf. Assigned to the Armor/ Engineer Board at Fort Knox, he quickly established a reputation as a uniquely gifted and creative systems developer and was reassigned to the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency as a project manager for multiple projects related to light combat vehicle technology. Now with an established reputation in the field, he became the first officer in the Army to be awarded two secondary specialties in lieu of a branch and a specialty. When the Army was searching for a leader to manage the Light Combat Vehicle Technology Program, he was nominated by the Chief Scientist of the Defense Department, accepted by the Chief of Staff of the Army and proceeded to design, organize, manage, and develop the joint Army/ Marine Corps Light combat Vehicle Technology Program that resulted in still ongoing research in light unmanned gun technology and advanced sensor systems. It was during this time that he became known as the "four star Major" for his eloquent and convincing briefings to the Army leadership and the fact that the other systems managers for the Army were Major Generals. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and awarded the very first Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. In spite of requests by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to remain in service, he decided to retire in 1982 and joined the Rand Corporation, Defense Department's principal research source, as a Senior Staff Member and lead project manager for advanced unmanned systems technology. He retired from Rand in 1997 remaining on call for advice for several years until finally retiring in full, as he often threatened to do in order to play golf, sing at karaoke and enjoy life to the fullest as he did until stricken with cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Juliet Covington of Ruskin, Florida; his children, Heather Covington of Easley, SC, and Terrell Covington Jr., (Elizabeth), of Wellford, SC; two grandchildren, Jackson and Max Rose; two brothers, Colonel Benjamin Covington (Ruth) of Vilas, NC, and Maury Covington (Dianne) of Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel, Florence, SC, followed by interment with full military honors at the family plot in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to LifePath Hospice, 3725 Upper Creek Drive, Ruskin, Florida 32573.

I am so sad to read about Terri's passing. He was a kind person and I always enjoyed listening to him sing karaoke. Lots of laughs when Terri was in the house at the Ramada in Pawleys Island. I am so thankful to have known him for a brief period of time. My sympathy to Juliet and all of Terri's family.

Heather and T.G., it is so hard to express all that your Dad meant to me growing up with him in Prattville and Myrtle Beach. Although he was almost grown, he always found plenty of time for his young cousin and gave me special attention that has lasted a lifetime. Allow yourselves the time to
grieve, but later when you want to remember, always picture that smile and it will be okay. It is easier for me to do that now because I got to know the both of you, in whom he will always live on.
God Bless.

A great loving and caring guy when you got to know him. Took his singing serious. The last songs he sang at our show were Blowin' In The Wind, For The Good Times, Honey, Margaritaville, and Time In A Bottle. He got upset at me once or twice for joshing while he was singing. Later in the evening we would laugh over it. Terry and Juliet were always generous, buying Debi & I a drink. Let's not leave out Juliet's singing abilities. We call her "Little Reba". They both last sang for us on July 5, 2012. Hope Juliet will continue singing. We're all gonna miss the Ole' Colonel. He didn't like it when I jokingly threw in "West Point class of 64" when calling him up to sing. What a guy. So full of life when we last saw him. He will never be forgotten.

Dad, you held me to a higher standard. You inspired, challenged, and loved me as much as any Father could.
I idolized you, and had the blessing of having you as a Parent and then Grandparent to my boys.
I just wish for anything it could have been for more time, but I am thankful for the time we had.
I would not be the person I am today without you. I miss you, I love you.

Julie,
Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer.

May the peace that comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

We did not know Terry but for a year, since he and Julie moved to our area. Terry had a gift for life and shared it with us all. When we look at the stars we will see his angel eyes looking back at us. Twinkling..The best to his family during this hard time.

Heather and family,
