I was privileged to serve with the incomparable CSM Wilbert Wilks when I commanded the Washington, DC Army Recruiting Company and he was my First Sergeant and he was an inspiration, a mentor, and a font of wisdom and brilliant little metaphors, stories and creative analogies.
My favorite was, "sometimes I feel like a horse in a coral surrounded by goats." Then he let that sink in, notice the look of confusion on my face and then added, "everybody´s butting up against me and I don´t understand what they´re saying." And he had dozens of those.
I wanted to reconnect and remembered he was so proud of his home in Conley, looked him up on the internet and learned he passed away. Of course he was on the road traveling to a prison to preach, counsel and inspire.
I was reflecting on his wisdom and all I learned from him just this week. I don´t know if anyone will read this but I wanted to let him know, how much I appreciated him.

My life was much richer because Rev. Wilkes was my friend. I spoke with him many times through our work relationship with Dunbar and Harper Funeral Homes and the prison system. I cherished his friendship.
