Richard C. Cassady, 96, of Blackstone passed away Sunday, June 8, 2025 at Goldwater Care in Pontiac.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 P.M. Monday, June 16th at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Father Ryan Mattingly will celebrate the mass.
Visitation will be from 10:30 A.M -12:30 P.M. Monday, June 16th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Streator. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492. Pallbearers will be his sons, Matthew, Stephen, Shawn, Charlie Cassady; grandson, Jonathan Cassady and godson, Jim Feuerborn.
Born November 27, 1928 in Streator he was the son of Charles L. and Marie M. (Feuerborn) Cassady. He married Janice Ondercho on November 28, 1964 at St. Stephen's Church, Streator.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Cassady; sons, Matthew R. Cassady of Champaign, Stephen R. (Dawn) Cassady of Champaign, Shawn R. (Anne) Cassady of Aurora, Charlie R. (Jenny) Cassady of Pontiac; grandchildren, Lauren, Bridget, Megan, Sasha, Riley, Natalie and Jonathan Cassady; sisters, Patricia and Rosemary Cassady of Lisle; sister-in-law, Judith Ondercho of Paxton and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dr. Raymond (Polly) Cassady; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and June Liptak.
Born in Streator, Dick attended Sunbury Grade School in rural Blackstone. He graduated as Valedictorian of his class from Dwight High School, Class of 1946. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was involved in the Rural Youth Organization. After high school, he served in the United States Army for 2 years during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the former St. Patrick's Church in Ransom. He was also a former member of the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council # 790 in Streator.
Dick was born to be a farmer. Farming was in his blood. After returning from his service in Korea, he resumed farming with his father. In his later years, he began farming with his son Charlie, continuing the Cassady farming legacy. He grew up on the farm and lived 94 of his 96 years on his family's farm.
He was a devout man who dedicated his life to family, faith, and farming. In his words, running a combine was "a real joy". He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
