A-Chu Yang (also known as A. C. Yang), 93, passed away peacefully at home in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood.
Born in Pingyang County, Zhejiang (formerly known as Che-Chiang or Chekiang) Province, China, A-Chu was promised in marriage at a young age, in keeping with tradition. Wanting a better life for her, her family sought to protect her from the impending civil war under Mao Tse Tung. Her mother begged the Yang family to take A-Chu with them to Taiwan. At just ten years old, A-Chu left her homeland and moved to Taipei with the Yang family.
At the time, Taiwan was under Japanese rule, and A-Chu and the Yang family were required to adopt Japanese customs and language. As a result, she was denied further formal education-an experience that deeply shaped her lifelong commitment to learning and opportunity for her children.
In Taiwan, A-Chu and her husband owned and operated Hua-Mei Chi Pao Tailoring, where they designed and created traditional Chinese garments for celebrities and people alike. A-Chu proudly wore her quipao every day, honoring her heritage, and she ensured that all of her children received the formal education she herself was denied.
Family was absolutely everything to A-Chu. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, helping to care for her children and all ten of her grandchildren-first in Taipei, then beginning in 1991 when she moved to the United States, living in San Jose, California; Midland, Michigan; and then in Japan. The family often joked that she made two trips around the world as grandchildren were born. In 2000, she settled in Chicago, following her youngest daughter and grandchildren from Edgewater to Jefferson Park, and finally to the Gold Coast.
Ama shared her advice openly but trusted each family member to make their own decisions. No matter how those decisions turned out, she stood by each and every one of them with unconditional love and unwavering support.
Survived by her children:
Chung-Ming "Philip" Yang (Yee), Chung-Ping "Rich" Yang (Miao-Yun "Marianne" Chen), Mei-Fong Zavala (Alfonso "Poyee"), Lily Yang (Alex Jiang), Hsiao-Li Yang (Cheng-Long Yang), and Mei-Chen "Gina" Yang.
Grandchildren:
Edward (Stephanie), Benjamin (Grace), Shelly (Tony Kang), Hong-Tai (Crystal), Pey-Shiuan "Pey-Pey" (John Lovorn), AJ (Alexandra Hussar), Chien-Hui (Bo-Hen Yang), Chien-Ke Ling-Ling, and Michael.
Great-grandchildren:
Brodhi, Remington, Hsin-Nin, Jonah, Lily, and Tavian.
A-Chu was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chung-Kwei Yang (2006), and her parents, Cheng-Yue Ho and Liang-Cha Chen.
In accordance with her wishes, the family ensured that A-Chu was dressed in her beautiful Quipao and witnessed her cremation.
A memorial service will be held in Taiwan.
