Anna "Lael" Portwood, a beacon of light and love, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 67. Born on February 24, 1958, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Lael was a cherished daughter, mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, whose exceptional spirit touched the lives of many.
Lael was the beloved daughter of Leroy and Nan (Hinson) Brazell, who instilled in her the values of kindness, generosity, and compassion. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and her cherished son, Marshall Jacob Neuhaus. Lael is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald Lee Portwood, who stood by her side as a partner and companion through life's journey. She leaves behind her son, Randall M. Portwood, and his wife, Danielle S. Taylor, as well as her daughter, Abigail C. Portwood-Estrada, and her husband, Moises "Moe" Estrada. Lael's heart was especially filled with joy for her grandchildren, Clara Lael Portwood-Estrada and Axel T. M. Portwood-Estrada, with whom she created countless memories that her family will treasure forever.
Lael's legacy is further carried on by her brother, Timothy B. Brazell, and her three beloved dogs, Daisy, Scruffy, and Butter Bean, who brought her immense joy and companionship.
A proud graduate of McLean High School in 1976, Lael continued her education at Texas Tech University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. Her pursuit of knowledge was mirrored in her military service in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1982, where she exemplified dedication and discipline.
Lael's exceptional talents extended beyond academics. She was an extraordinarily gifted pianist, and her love for music was a testament to her vibrant spirit. Her hobbies included knitting, cooking, scuba diving, fishing, gardening, and exploring new culinary experiences. Lael was adventurous and enjoyed hunting, archery, and shooting, while her creative side flourished through fiber arts. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren, as she found fulfillment in creating lasting memories and sharing her passions with them.
Lael's warmth and kindness made her beloved by all who knew her. She had an innate ability to touch the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her family, friends, and community. Lael's caring nature and generous spirit were evident in her active involvement with her church's music ministry and her support for Burttschell Rescue Ranch.
A celebration of Lael's life will be held on November 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, where friends and family are invited to gather and honor a remarkable woman who lived life to the fullest.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lael's name to the St. Peter's United Methodist Church Music Ministry or Burttschell Rescue Ranch, organizations that reflect her love for music and animals.
Anna "Lael" Portwood will be deeply missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Her legacy of kindness, love, and adventure will live on in the stories shared by her family and friends and in the memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
