Abelardo Perez Barrera, lovingly known as Eddie or Lalo, passed away on October 31, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on June 9, 1937, and resided in
Dimmitt, Texas.
Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 2:00PM at the First Baptist Church with Brother Joe Barrera and Dr. Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home.
Eddie was a man full of life, love, and music. From the young age of 14, he discovered his passion for playing the accordion - a gift that would earn him the nickname "El Rey de los Acordeonistas de West Texas." His music brought joy to many, and his lively spirit could light up any room. Eddie also had a gift for making people smile-he was a jokester who loved to make others laugh and always knew how to bring joy and good times wherever he went. When he wasn't playing music, Eddie found peace fishing, camping, and spending time with his wife and kids. He was also a man of faith who cherished his church community deeply. Eddie & his Wife Sharlene were Married at the Primera Iglesia Bautista and were long time members. Eddie faithfully served his church through his music and was a devoted board member who gave his time and heart to serving others and maintaining the church grounds. Above all, Eddie loved his family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he shared his warmth, laughter, and lessons with them every chance he got. He especially loved spending time with his grandkids, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Popo." He also deeply loved and cherished listening to his daughter Patricia sing - her voice always filled him with pride and happiness. He spent much of his life working in agriculture, where his dedication and work ethic were an example to all who knew him.
Eddie is survived by his loving wife, Sharlene Barrera of 43 years, and his children: Amanda and husband Fernando Sanchez, Cynthia and spouse Ruben Flores, Patricia Barrera, Rita and husband Mark Wheeler, Cesario and wife Melissa Barrera, Jesse (Koko) and wife Keebra Barrera. also including extended half brothers and sisters.
He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Gabriel and Destiny Enriquez, Elayna Garcia, Fabian and Erik Reyna, Antonio Gonzales, Roman, Isaac, Omar Jr., Marissa, Harley, Marcus, Aaron, Naomi Gutierrez, Ralph Cardenas along with many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren who filled his life with love and joy.
Eddie leaves behind his siblings: Emilio and wife Dora Barrera, Maria Elena "Moe" Puente, Gloria Montoya, and Adela and husband Henry Acevedo. He is also survived by his loving mother-in-law, Judith Badillo.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Cesario and Petra Barrera, siblings, Maria Antonia Diaz (Cuchie), Roberto Barrera, Elidia Martinez, Amelia Barrera, and Benito Barrera, children, Noemi Barrera, Raul Barrera, Florentina Barrera.
Pallbearers include Fabian Reyna, Erik Reyna, Gabriel Enriquez, Antonio Gonzales, Ralph Cardenas. Cesario Barrera.
Eddie will be remembered for his kind heart, joyful soul, and the beautiful music that will live on in the hearts of everyone who heard him play.
