Abie Foster Shugart Jr., of Jasper, AL, passed surrounded by family on the 19th of September 2025. A man of deep character, Abie was known as a warm, kind, steadfast man. He valued a hard day’s work, found true joy with his family life, and especially appreciated the farm while running his tractor.
Abie was a 62-year Mason and Past Master of York Lodge 211. He carried this role with great pride, dedication, and humility. To his family, he was more than just a husband, father or grandfather — He was the rock, listener, encourager, and heart of it all. Forever, he will be remembered as the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and all-around friend that anyone could hope for.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 22, at 11:00 AM at Freeman-Hood Funeral Services. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM at Freeman-Hood, with a Masonic burial at Walker Memory Gardens. The service will be officiated by Chris Burns and Jeffery Woods. Dennis Freeman will direct the service.
Abie Foster Shugart Jr. was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice Shugart, and his son, Donald Shugart. He is survived by his devoted wife Annie Maxine Shugart, his daughter Keslie Woods (Timothy), his sister Betty Burns (Leon), his grandchildren Katie Tamm (Nick), Emily Edwards (Thomas), Spencer Woods (Maegan), and great-grandchildren, Winnie, Owen, Edee, Lilly Margaret, Ian, Emma, Nolan, and future great-grandson Lane.
Abie leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faithfulness, and strength. His presence will deeply be missed, but his memory will forever live on in the lives of those who loved him. He was unwavering in his faith and was steadfast in his dedication to his family.
Pallbearers will be Spencer Woods, Thomas Edwards, Timothy Woods, Cain Cordell, Robbie Lane, and Steve Heathcock; Jimbo Thomas, Darrell Durham, Bruce Wilson, and JB Busbin will serve as honorary pallbearers. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
