Adam Norris Andrzejewski, 55, of Hinsdale passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday morning, August 18. He is survived by his wife, Kerry, and their daughters Ellie, Molly and Emma, and by six younger siblings, his mother, and many good friends.
Adam was born August 2, 1969 to John and Janet (Norris) Andrzejewski. He grew up in Herscher, Illinois, a small town full of good people and a place that formed in him a strong sense of community and civic pride. He studied business at Northern Illinois University and after graduating with a BA in Business Management and working briefly as a financial adviser, he became an entrepreneur, co-founding the community publishing firm HomePages® Directories which grew eventually to become the largest publisher of small-town telephone directories in the United States. Seeking a larger impact, Adam successfully exited that business after nine years of rapid growth and began a second career in public service and public policy.
Starting with a gathering of concerned parents and taxpayers at a neighbor's kitchen in 2008, Adam began obtaining and publishing local school district expenditure records online. His call to "publish the public checkbook" and create better governmental accountability grew quickly from suburban school districts to community colleges, and from there to eventually become OpenTheBooks.com. With the mission "Every Dime, Online, in Real Time" Adam's nonprofit became the nation's largest government transparency portal, growing eventually to include billions of searchable government payroll, pension, and line item expenditures from all units of local, state, and federal government. In the words of the Wall Street Journal, "OpenTheBooks.com has fomented a revolution in fiscal transparency." His fact-based, nonpartisan work broke national news independently and also consistently supported journalists across the political spectrum, from Fox News to the New York Times. Research published by OpenTheBooks.com is repeatedly cited in Congressional oversight hearings and reflected in federal legislation. Adam's incredible work ethic, energy, and practical sense of optimism will be deeply missed by his colleagues at work, and by advocates for strong fiscal accountability in government everywhere.
Adam's proudest role was as husband and father. If you spoke with Adam on any topic for more than a minute or two, you were certain to hear a story about Kerry, the love of his life, or about his daughters Emma, Molly and Ellie, who filled Adam's days with joy, surprise, and constant wonder.
He was a man of quiet faith and trusted God deeply. As a dad, husband, entrepreneur, or public accountability advocate, Adam was first a good friend and a positive influence on everyone he came to know. Across a wide circle of people from all walks of life, Adam was loved for his enthusiasm, encouragement, optimism and decency. His sudden passing leaves us with an emptiness that we know will one day be filled with God's peace, and with his own spirit of can-do possibility and passion for life that are his legacy now.
Visitation will be held at Sullivan Family Funeral Home 60 South Grant Street, Hinsdale, Illinois, 60521 on Wednesday August 21, from 4-8pm.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 306 West 4th Street, Hinsdale on Thursday August 22, at 10am.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The National Shrine of St. Jude.

I first met Adam when I was new in my carpet cleaning business. He was in Lake Bluff selling ad space in home pages. I actually learned a lot from Adam. He was so sincere and honest with his sales pitch. I learned how to sell but just be yourself and not be a pushy sales person. I really enjoyed our conversations. He made a big impact on me and he never knew it. I was so sad when he moved on to follow his dreams. While I hadn´t talk with Adam for years he really left an impression on me and I will never forget him. My condolences to his family.

I´m sorry that Adam has passed and I offer my sincerest condolences to his beautiful wife, daughters and to his mother and siblings. I didn´t know him but was watching one of his videos and was impressed with his work. The video was 4 yrs old so I was researching to find out how well his awesome work had advanced. It was a depressing blow to find that this fine man had passed away. I do not know anyone like Mr Andrzejewski that has managed to make a way for complete.accountability of a company or government spending. He was Brilliant.

I didn't know Adam personally but told many about his work oftentimes to friends anyone who would listen. His website was an amazing enterprise. I sang the Star Spangled Banner at this rally when he ran for the gubernatorial race. Worked alongside his sister at UCEF and always thought of him as a fearless leader in Illinois. My deepest condolences to his wife and children. I will pray for his repose at daily mass. I'm so sorry we've lost such a great man and voice.

I met Adam through my work with the late US Senator Tom Coburn and the Convention of States. Tom only worked with people that had the highest of integrity, work ethic and moral character...that was Adam.

Adam uncovered the truth and provided transparency to the American people. He was a magnificent orator. He could recall facts and stats and relay his message with clarity and passion like few others. I had such great respect for him and I will continue to carry the torch of liberty in his memory.

Adam's loss is a tragedy for all Americans, but especially for Adam's family who were blessed to be closest to him, and share each day on earth with a man who set such a beautiful example of living life to the fullest with honor and integrity.

As we mourn the loss of such an exemplary man, Adam is home with his Lord and Savior. May God welcome Adam home as He provides comfort and peace for Adam's family.

I loved working for Adam. He was my first job during college and I couldn't imagine working for a better first boss. His excitement in everything he did was contagious and his passion for serving the American people was evident in his everyday actions, as he poured out his life to fulfill his promise when he ran for governor. He personally inspired me to continue working with the small business world and service people we can see face to face.

He was also a deeply God-fearing man, who would often serve his Parish as a lector and be a part of the theology conversations he had at the office. The formation of his staff was excellent and pushed us all to join the work we believe in. We will be praying for the repose of his soul and his family during this difficult time.

Adam was the best boss ever. I worked my first internship at OpenTheBooks and had an absolute blast. Almost 10 years later, I still miss that summer. Adam showed us the direct result of our work, always with exclamations of how important the impact was. He made scrolling through reams of spreadsheets something for which we woke up every day with excitement and anticipation. He always shared the accomplishment with us, spreading his joy and letting his light shine brightly, a positive force of nature.
Adam dedicated himself heavily to American transparency. If democracy dies in darkness, he was the light that gave it life. I remember him choking up with tears at a dinner as he told us just how close to his heart this work is, and how grateful he was for our contribution in forwarding it.
Adam treasured his family and spoke highly of them with a tenderness and glimmer in his eye. They were the font of his energy and optimism. He taught us so much, mostly by example.
He is surely rejoicing with his Creator. He was a firebrand, a friend, and a father, and we feel his loss deeply. Praying God comfort for Adam's family.

We spoke about one of his articles. I talked to him about one of my projects involving corruption and the elderly victims. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. When Kerry and I were young and single and living in downtown Chicago, I wondered if she would ever find a man who could possibly keep up with her energy, wit and deep faith.... Enter Adam Andrzejewski- the most charismatic, jovial, funny and kind man I had ever met... Adam swept Kerry off of her feet, showered her with flowers and thoughtful dates and lovingly called her his "little tiger" . I will always be grateful that I was there to witness Adam and Kerry´s courtship. They set a high bar for me as I continued to navigate the dating world in Chicago. Adam and Kerry´s relationship and mutual respect for one another coupled with their faith in God and desire to contribute positively to this world had an enormous impact on me and my life - so much so that I sought their approval and advice when I met and eventually married my wonderful husband Mark. We stood up
in each other´s weddings, grew our families moved to new places and, as sometimes happens - lost touch over the years. Adam and I would touch base through social media, Christmas cards were sent- but regrettably, we missed the opportunity to stay connected. Mark and I were always so impressed and in awe of everything that Adam and Kerry have accomplished both with their beautiful family as well as their impact on politics and the state of our broken government. I am still in shock to hear of Adam´s passing, but I do believe that God has a plan. I know that Adam is not done leading and contributing to this world, he just has better access now in the warm embrace of our God. Kerry- I love you and have you heavily on my mind. As you and your girls grieve, I hope you know that I would do anything for you. With all of my love and sympathy- Megan Woelk Mescher

This is a hard hit. We are in shock and heartbroken. Adam was "the best of the best" Madison County, Illinois loved Adam and looked up to his leadership. Phyllis Schlafly, whose hometown was Alton Illinois looked up to him, as well. I remember sitting in her Clayton, Missouri Office when she met Adam for the first time. She was thrilled to meet him and eagerly went to her file cabinet and pulled out a canceled $100 check that she had donated to his father´s campaign in the Chicago area many years ago. We will miss you so much, my friend. Sarah Daniel Godfrey Illinois.

I thank him for his selfless service to citizens and taxpayers.

I'm so sorry to hear of Adam's passing. He was a Tireless Crusader in making sure Government was accountable to those it was supposed to serve. Adam was giving of himself in helping others succeed. Over the last couple years I was lucky to share a podium a few times when I was talking about problems with our elections and Adam was sharing his incredible knowledge of government abuse of taxpayer money from all over the country. There were private moments in those public forums when he and I discussed the relationship between election security and fiscally irresponsible government. I was always astonished at Adam's encyclopedic knowledge of government waste and his capacity to cite facts and figures with nearly no notes. He was an underappreciated national treasure. His passing is surely a deep personal loss for his friends and family, but it is a loss for America as well.

Adam was the best of us, and he spoke for those of us who did not have a voice - or who did not have the words that he did. He brought light to truth, and had more journalistic integrity than those who call themselves journalists. He raised money and networked with people as necessary to build the infrastructure to find the truth, as only a businessperson could. And that was what was so impressive about Adam: he saw a place where investigative journalism, business, public policy, and activism intersected, and he saw many years into the future. We really take for granted all that Adam has done for us in Illinois, and it's because of him that so many local governments preemptively post financial records online.

I really appreciate what Adam did for me at a time in my life when I was young and wanted to be taken seriously, and it's because of his investment in me that I'm successful today. He didn't write me off as unimportant but saw who I was able to become and spent time with me to help me get started. He really inspired me and continues to inspire me to this day.
