Adam Charles Hurst, 43, of Odenton, Maryland, entered eternal rest in his home on December 4, 2025. Adam was a cherished father, husband, son, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Adam was born in
Corvallis, Oregon on October 20, 1982 to Lyle Hurst and Cindy Wing. He has 2 older sisters, Renee and Angie, and a younger brother, Brett. In his family Adam was a constant, steady, and calm presence with a cheerful disposition. Adam lived in Barcelona, Spain for 2 years in his childhood which encouraged his love of languages and travel.
After living in Spain his family moved to Boise, Idaho where he grew up loving baseball, soccer, biking, airplanes, paleontology, history, learning, and building models. At age 8 he chose to be baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spent his life dedicated and striving to live his faith. He graduated from Capital High School in 2001, and went on to BYU Provo for college.
After his freshman year, Adam served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Little Rock, Arkansas for 2 years. His mission created a love for barbecue and increased his interest in history, languages, and the Bible. Upon his return he enjoyed cinematography, astronomy, Hebrew, and particularly ancient Near East history classes. He enjoyed hiking in the same mountains as previous generations of his family. He graduated in 2009 with a BA in History, and a minor in Hebrew.
During his college years Adam met and dated his wife Melissa, and married for time and all eternity on September 5, 2009 in the Mount Timpanogos Temple in Utah. In 2011, Adam joined the Army and trained to be an Arabic linguist. Their first son, Isaac Charles Hurst was born in March 2012 in Monterey, CA during his training. While mastering Arabic his work ethic helped him to excel and be chosen to study abroad in Morocco.
His first duty station was Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA where he and Melissa's second son, Abram Joseph Hurst was born in January 2016. That March Adam transitioned to the Army National Guard and became a full-time government contractor. This brought the Hurst family to
Odenton, MD. In 2018, Adam was diagnosed with brain cancer and in 2024 he experienced a recurrence. He subsequently went through treatment both times. Adam never stopped striving to live and engage in life.
Adam worked as a multi-disciplined language analyst in national security in the Army and as a contractor working at the NSA. His Army career included 5 years active duty and 9 years in the Maryland National Guard. The most noteworthy awards Adam received in the Army are the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and The Adjutant General's Special Recognition Ribbon.
Adam was sought as a leader because of his personalized and empathetic mentorship both in the Army and in his contractor work. In a letter from the NSA director, Adam is recognized as having in-depth knowledge, careful attention to detail, initiative, and exceptional skill in building collaborative relationships. The letter also notes that he helped save lives by working to remove dangerous threats around the globe.
Adam was a dedicated husband and father to his wife and children. He was supportive, kind, creative, curious, a great conversationalist, and had a bright mind with the best trivia. Adam was an animated storyteller with voices for every character, rescues of stuffed animals from planets, and adventurous obstacle course stories inspired by Indiana Jones. Adam was the king of dad jokes and endless wit. He shared his faith, love of music, Star Wars, movies, and childhood passions with his family.
He strived to live true to his values and was a great example. Adam was independent, stalwart, resilient, and kind to the end of his days. Adam had faith and courage in life after death.
Adam is survived by his maternal grandmother, Jean Wing, father, Lyle Hurst (Leslye Louie), mother, Cindy Wing, siblings, Renee Dittman (Quinn), Angie Castle (Brent), and Brett Hurst (Chelsea), wife, Melissa, sons, Isaac and Abram, and 19 nieces and nephews.
