Adele Catherine "Cathy" Martinez

Martinez, Adele "Cathy" Catherine 7/14/1941 - 9/26/2022 Cathy, beloved sister, loving aunt, and unforgettable friend passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022. Cathy was born on July 14, 1941, in Study Butte, Texas but was raised in Mexico, hence her fluency in both English and Spanish. Early on she demonstrated her adventurous spirit by choosing to attend a college, Michigan Technology University, one thousand miles from home earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. Upon graduation, Cathy moved to Ann Arbor and began her distinguished professional career in the Department of Pathology at The University of Michigan. Cathy's expertise was in Pediatric Hematology and over the next fifty years, she mentored hundreds of students and colleagues. Cathy was a devout Catholic who never wavered from her belief in God. Her deep faith and trust in the Lord was the center of her life. As a longtime member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, she was dedicated to many of its ministries, including numerous prayer groups and bible studies. She was especially committed to the migrant community of the area where Cathy was a leader in serving over two decades. Cathy's kind, caring heart and giving nature left an endearing impression on everyone she met. She traveled around the world with great friends and was always ready to relax and enjoy a glass of wine. Cathy will be remembered for the close friendships she nurtured over the years and by all those whose lives she touched and made a little brighter. Cathy is survived by her brothers, Baltazar (Laurentina) Martinez and Louis Martinez; her aunt, Rosemary Schwenk; and her dearest friend and companion, Clark Lowman; along with her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives are richer for having her in their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Baltazar and Adele (Gemigniani) Martinez; and sister, Rosita Herrera. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Monday, October 3, 2022 with visitation at 9:30 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 530 Elizabeth Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Cathy's honor to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in care of St. Thomas the Apostle Church or Hope Clinic, Ypsilanti Michigan.
