Fredrick Martinez Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel on Feb. 9, 2026.
Rick Martinez passed away suddenly on December 23, 2025. He was rehearsing with his band for an upcoming show. Fittingly, he was doing what he loved best – making live music with friends.

Rick was raised in the Emeryville-Richmond, CA area and graduated from Harry Ells High School in 1967. He became an extremely talented drummer. Along the way he met his lifelong friend John Nady, founder of Nady Systems. Rick played in numerous local bands throughout the 60's and 70's – Titanic, The Treez, John Nady and the Captain Nasty Band, T2, and others. He has played a lifetime of music with countless Bay Area musicians and a few other professionals.

Rick started a career with Alameda County starting in the probation department. He served with the Sheriff's Department in various positions, then returned to Alameda County as a counselor. He earned his BS and MPA degrees from CSU East Bay. He then went to Florida to work for the Ninth Judicial Circuit and as a Life Skills Counselor in Orlando. He returned to Alameda County, and ultimately retired as a Director of Juvenile Services in 2016. Even while he was working, he embraced his passion for live and recorded music over the decades and well into retirement.

In retirement, he enjoyed numerous live band and recording projects. He co-wrote well over ten albums of original music, played with a dozen working bands, and recorded a tremendous body of music with friends. He rallied and helped organize with friends the Garage Band Reunions of the East Bay for over 10 years. 2025 was highlighted by playing at the 50th Anniversary of the Concord Pavillion with one of his current bands.

He met Jan Beasley and they were married in 2000. Rick was a caring step-father to Jan's three children. Jan and Rick have always welcomed to their home with open arms the parade of friends and musicians over the past 25 years. Rick also loved his two dogs.

Rick is survived by his wife Jan; the stepchildren Kelli, Scott, Richard; son Eric and daughter Chelsea from previous marriages; along with their spouses, and 5 grandchildren. He was well loved by his family and friends. He had a generous heart and was always was quick to laugh. Unending love and thoughts for our wonderful Rick.

Celebration of Life is planned at the Veteran's Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Ave, Danville, CA on February 22, 2026 from 12 to 2pm.

Rick and I worked at the Probation Department, where I found him to be a shoulder to lean on when things were rough. He was a kind, thoughtful man. Rest in peace, brother.

I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to Rick´s family, friends and loved ones. I had the pleasure of working with Rick at the probation department. He and I shared an office wall as newly promoted middle managers. I found Rick to be bright, kind hearted, and thoughtful. He was generous with his praise but measured with his words of correction. I appreciate all that he did to contribute to our team and those we served. Rest well brother!
