John Speakman, born February 2, 1944, in San Francisco, California, passed away on December 23, 2025, at the age of 81 due to the effects of a stroke. John served in both the Oakland and Piedmont Fire Departments. After serving 29 years in the Oakland Fire Department, he was appointed Fire Chief of the City of Piedmont in 1997, and served ably until his retirement in 2010, bringing 42 years in the fire service to a close. During his tenure, he provided excellent fire protection and emergency medical services to both the Oakland and Piedmont residents, as well as disaster preparedness, CPR, and first aid classes in conjunction with the cities' changing needs. John spent his retired years occupied by his loves of sailing, motorcycling, golfing, cooking, and spending time with his two grandchildren, Keoni and Emiko. John is survived by his son, Matthew; daughter-in-law, Cheryl; his grandchildren, Keoni and Emiko; and was preceded in death by his wife, Susan. At John's request, there will be no service.
