Adeline Saia, 98 years and 356 days old, Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the House at Midland Care.
Adeline was born the eleventh of thirteen children on November 18, 1926, to Joseph and Margaret Kuhn Schreiner in Hays, Kansas. She attended school in Schoenchen and graduated from the 8th grade in 1940 as the class valedictorian. She was not allowed to attend high school when she graduated because she had to work to help provide income for her family; however, she did complete her GED from Topeka High School in 1981. She lived in Schoenchen and surrounding Ellis County communities most of her childhood. In 1943, Adeline and her family moved to Topeka. She worked at Seymour Foods and later in Federal Civil Service as a telephone operator at the VA Hospital.
On October 1, 1949, Adeline and Joseph S. Saia were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church, enjoying over 64 years together prior to his passing on June 18, 2014.
The Saias were active parishioners at Holy Name Church for 71 years. Adeline was involved in the Holy Name Altar Guild and the church choir. She was also famous for her homemade noodles which she donated to the annual Holy Name Fall Bazaar.
Other activities included participating in the Catholic Bowling League where she made many lifelong friends. Adeline was a seamstress who spent many years making wedding and bridesmaid dresses and doing alterations for hundreds of clients in Topeka. After moving to Thornton Place Independent Living when Joe died, she continued her alterations service, became a Thornton Place Ambassador and led exercise classes daily for residents much younger than herself! She was always a social butterfly and she loved connecting with people well into her 90's. She was the Schreiner family matriarch for several years and was the expert on family history, relishing that role. She also loved to play cards, especially the Schreiner family game Dingbat. She enjoyed passing down her Dingbat expertise to younger generations of her family.
Adeline is survived by her three children, Karen Morrow (Chuck) and Joseph P. Saia of Topeka and Tony G. Saia (Kris) of Winnsboro, TX. She has two grandchildren, Dillon Dreher (Michelle Albano) of Kansas City, MO and Lindy Brewer (Jeff) of Topeka; four great-grandchildren, Nolan Brewer, Jalen Moore (Maleeah), Camden Brewer, and Talia Dreher; one great-great-grandchild, Knox Moore; and brothers, Joe from Plano, Texas and Herb from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, ten siblings, and her daughter-in-law, Glenda Taylor.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 21, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, followed by the rosary and Family Remembrances. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 22, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care or Christ the King Catholic Church, sent in care of the funeral home.
