Lawrence Joseph Saia, known affectionately as Larry to his friends and loved ones, passed away on November 2, 2025, in Madison Heights, Michigan, at the age of 88. Born on December 14, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, Larry's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his passion for sports, and a distinguished career that spanned over five decades.
Larry's journey began as a young man in Detroit, where he cultivated a love for athletics that would become a defining feature of his life. His competitive spirit and natural talent led him to participate in hockey, football, baseball, and softball. His enthusiasm for sports was not just limited to playing; he also devoted much of his time to coaching, most notably football at Guardian Angels. Under his leadership, the team soared to great heights, competing in the CYO championship at the Pontiac Silverdome, a proud moment that showcased Larry's coaching acumen and his ability to inspire young athletes.
Beyond the playing fields, Larry was a dedicated member of the Operating Engineers Union for over 50 years, where his hard work, integrity, and camaraderie were greatly valued. His commitment to his profession was matched only by his devotion to his faith, living a life that exemplified Christian principles of love, kindness, and service to others.
Larry's life was also characterized by a profound love for his family. He shared a beautiful and enduring marriage with his wife of 63 years, Mary Saia. Together, they were blessed with three children: Stephanie Pavliscak (Phil), Angela Johnson (Steve), and Joseph Saia (Jenni), who in turn filled their lives with joy through their grandchildren: Nick Cook (Kari Carlson), Matt Cook (Caitlin), the late Kathryn Pavliscak, Zachary Danks (Caroline), Matt Johnson, Kristina Tyler (Andrew), Joseph Pavliscak (Alyx), Justin Danks (Renee), Josh Saia (Brittany), and Jacob Saia. Larry's legacy continued to flourish with the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Olivia, Amaya, Juniper, Zoe, Louie, Levi, Leo, Lauren, Charlie, and Joey. He cherished every moment spent with his family, embracing each new addition with love and pride.
In retirement, Larry's adventurous spirit took him across the country, where he shared countless memories with his lifelong friends. This close-knit group, having bonded since childhood, explored the vast landscapes of America, reinforcing the bonds of friendship that had been a cornerstone of Larry's life.
Larry's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, yet his memory will be celebrated for the rich and fulfilling life he led. He will be remembered as a man who embraced life's challenges with determination, who loved deeply, and who impacted the lives of many through his passion for sports and community involvement. Larry's legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him, and his story will be told with admiration by generations to come.
As we bid farewell to Lawrence Joseph Saia, we take solace in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of purpose and joy. His spirit, love, and teachings will endure, guiding us through our own journeys with the strength and grace he always exhibited. Larry will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will be treasured forever.

Yesterday

Larry was one of my best friends growing up in Detroit. We spent our summers playing sports and hanging out with all our buddies from Pelkey, Hickory, Alcoy, and Joann streets. I remember Saturday mornings in the fall at Larry´s house painting Michigans yellow stripes on our football helmets. Cheering the Wolverines on as they whooped Ohio State. Larry was very popular when he bought his 56 Ford convertible. We had great memories cruising down Gratiot on Friday nights.
I will miss you old Pal. Will be glad to see you up there some day soon.
God Bless you. Your pal, Tom Lauka
