Joseph Saia Obituary

Born in Paterson to the late Salvatore and Carmella (Semenario) Saia, Joseph lived there for many years before settling in Vernon fifty-three years ago. Dedicated to service for others, Joseph enlisted in the US Army in 1956. After he was discharged, he worked as a fireman and EMT for the City of Paterson, until he retired as a Battalion Chief of the Paterson Fire Department in 1996. He was a member of the NJ Firefighters' Mutual Benevolent Association and the NJ Retired Police and Firemen's Association.
Predeceased by his parents; sisters Josephine Napolitano and Ida Paolucci; and brothers Vincent, Louis, and Leonard Saia, Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen (Browne) Saia; children Joseph Saia, Jr. (Lisa), James Saia (Catherine Gill), Patricia Ann Carota (Gary), Michael Saia (Susan), and Kathleen Garvey (Shawn); as well as his eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Salvatore Saia (Mary Jane) and sister-in-law Karin Saia.
Visitation for Joseph will be held on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, from 4-8PM at the Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home (One Vanderhoof Court for GPS), 241 Route 94, Vernon, NJ 07462. A Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, July 16th, 11AM at the St. Jude the Apostle RC Church in Hamburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
