Growing up, the church was important to the Washington Family. In was in 1936 when Sister Washington confessed hope in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized by the Reverend Mose Burks and became a member of the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Sister Washington and her siblings sang in the church choir long before there was piano music to accompany the voices. Sister Adrain had a beautiful alto voice. In addition to singing at Pine Grove, the choir ventured to other churches to praise the Lord.
As recently as 2021 (during the COVID-19 Pandemic) the Christian Workers Fellowship, a church ministry, desired to honor Sister Carter forMother's Day. It was decided that one of her descendants would present a tribute that she and her family would enjoy virtually. Great-granddaughter Ashley Staten wrote a poem, and Granddaughter Marica Carter presented it on Mother's Day. At the time of her passing she was the oldest member of the Pine Grove M. B. Church at 103 years old.
On December 22, 1940, Earl Carter Sr. and Adrain Washington were joined in Holy Matrimony. This union was blessed with six children. The family lived on the Nelson Farm. The Carters lived off the land. Living off the land along with God's grace – growing their own gardens of healthy vegetables, raising their own hogs and possessing fruit trees made for healthy living which contributed to Mrs. Carter's longevity.
Sister Carter reared her six children, all her grandchildren, great grandchildren and even some of her great-great grandchildren. She enjoyed taking care of the children before they were school age, during school age, and even after school age. Sometimes with careful observation, one might see an extra six or seven children around the table or in the yard. Nieces and nephews would walk half a mile to ask their Aunt Adrain if she had any biscuits. This family was a fixture in the Harvest Community for more than a century.
