Amara Hammer

Amara Hammer, age 89, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on December 31, 2025.
Amara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her strength, her "unique" golf swing, and her sharp sense of humor. A lifelong runner, she embodied determination and grit, proudly competing in the Pittsburgh Great Race for 30 consecutive years.
In her cherished role as "Gaga," Amara was always the self-appointed captain of the play team, enthusiastically instigating and leading her grandchildren in an endless series of reckless fun. She believed deeply in laughter, movement, and making memories, and she lived those values every day.
Amara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joel. She is survived by her three children: Jay (Rebecca), Rick (Jenny), Darcie (Rich), six grandchildren, and one great-grandson, all of whom were the great joy of her life.
She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Joy and Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic churches. Amara will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for the love, energy, and joy she brought to her family and all who knew her.
A brief visitation will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, January 10th at Soxman Funeral Homes, Ltd. (7450 Saltsburgh Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15235), followed by a blessing service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private for family.
