Born May 19, 1949 in Missoula, Montana, he was the son of the late Merton W. and Deloris V. Moen Kemmis.

For several years, he owned a video store, Eagle Talon Video in Sidney, Nebraska. Alan also worked as a night clerk at a truck stop called SAPP Brothers.
Alan liked old trucks and cars and was also fond of trains and cats. In his later years, he always drank soda or chocolate milk. Also enjoyed old movies and television shows as well as history, politics, and football. His favorite teams were the 49ers, the Eagles, and the Ravens.
