Alan P. Keniston, 78 of Westbrook, ME, died peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME
on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, after a brief illness with his daughter by his side.
Alan was born in Portland, Maine on March 11, 1947; the son of the late Lloyd Sr. and
Joan (Chase) Keniston. He grew up in South Portland, Maine and attended local
schools. He had a long career with the City of Westbrook Public Works where he made
several good friends while he was there. Alan was a member of both the Eagles Club
and the American Legion of Westbrook and loved his trips to Vegas and Foxwoods with
his late wife.
Alan married the love of his life, Nancy (Hoyt), on April 22, 1976. They met in 1973
when Alan was working as a floor guard at Happy Wheels in Portland, ME and Nancy
told her friend that she was going to marry him. They raised two children and had many
great friends who were like family to them and who they loved camping, playing cards
and traveling with.
In his retirement, Alan loved his fishing days with his oldest brother, Lloyd Jr. and
playing cribbage with his friends in his housing complex and on his computer. Alan is
described as fun and a real sweetheart by all who knew him and he will be dearly
missed. Alan had a larger than life personality and never met a person he wouldn't talk
to.
Alan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Nancy, who passed away on
August 19, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Sr. and Joan
Keniston; his middle brother, Ronald Keniston; and his nephew, Ian Keniston.
Surviving Alan are his children; Shelly A. Keniston of Whitman, MA, and Gary A.
Keniston and his wife Arie of Gorham, ME and Terrie Peters of Tucson, AZ and his grandchildren Alivia and Hunter
Keniston. Alan is also survived by his oldest brother, Lloyd Keniston Jr. of Buxton, ME,
his sister-in-law Susan Keniston of Westbrook, ME and all his nieces and nephews who
loved their Uncle Alan.
His children say that he was the best Dad for them and no matter how little he had, he
made sure they had what they needed.
At Alan's request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the Keniston family
suggests memorials be made in Alan's name to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at
www.bbch.com, where his grandchildren were treated, if you are so inclined.
