Alan Wilson Knowles Sr, age 83 of Whitehaven MD. passed away peacefully at his home in
Greenville, SC on Wednesday January 31st. He was born January 14th, 1941, son of Alan
Gorman Wilson Knowles and Lee Ila Knowles.
Alan was a graduate of Wicomico High School, class of 1959. After graduation, he served in the
US Air Force as a small arms instructor. A true entrepreneur and jack of all trades, during his life
he was a welder, a farmer, and owned several businesses. These businesses include Knowles
Garage (Salisbury MD), Knowles Trucking (Whitehaven, MD) and a seafood restaurant in
Wilmington, DE "Mr. Crab". During this time, he was known for hiring men with criminal
backgrounds, believing in the good in people and that everyone deserves a second chance.
Before retirement, he had a successful career in sales at Wareheim Air Brakes in Salisbury,
MD.
A kind, compassionate, quick-witted man, he was always ready to help out anyone in need.
Always full of laughter and positivity, he could bring joy to even the most mundane or
unpleasant task. Aside from his hustle, his true passion was training his bird dogs and
quail/grouse hunting. As a young man, he was known amongst his friends for his marksmanship
and his giving nature. He enjoyed going to yard sales and watching westerns in his leisure.
Alan was married and divorced twice. With his second marriage he suddenly became a father of
three, and a fourth came along a few years later. He was a kind, yet firm father who truly loved
all his children and did his best to instill his work ethic to ensure their success as adults.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Cynthia Lokey. He is survived by his
sister Norma Lee Knowles, his children, Kimberly McGee, Michael Knowles Williams, Jennifer,
and Alan Knowles Jr (JR).
At Alan's request, he will be cremated and there will be no services held. The family plans to
spread his ashes on his old farm in Whitehaven, MD. To share a memory or
condolences to the family please post to the Tribute Wall.
