Alan Plaisted Marshall Jr., age 70, cherished husband of Anna-Marie (Downey) Marshall, of Durham, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden. He was born in Cherry Point, NC on June 10, 1955, a son of the late Alan P. Marshall Sr. and the late Joyce (Ryder) Downes. He was a Durham resident for many years, in a quiet country town where his family called home.
Alan was a man of many talents and shared them unselfishly with anyone who asked. As a boy, lovingly known as "Tink" and as a young man, he worked with his family on their farm in Jefferson, New Hampshire and later on farms in Middletown and Durham CT. As an adult he mastered the craft of auto repair in Service Stations in Durham. He was forever grateful to his stepfather, Tracy Downes, for the introduction to the International Union of Elevator Constructors. While a Mechanic of IUEC Local 91, in his distinctive approach, his strong work ethic and his firm will to "make Tracy proud" he attained legendary status as an Elevator Constructor. He began his 40+ year elevator career at the Norman Elevator, installed countless elevators with Otis Elevator and later worked with his brother-in-law and friend, Jae, at Hartford Elevator. It was his time at this family business, Hartford Elevator, of which he was most proud and satisfied.
Alan was a devoted husband and father. He married Ramona when he was 18 and they spent 34 years raising their 3 children together. He worked hard to provide for his family. Throughout their childhood, Alan taught his children how to fix everything. He was a man with a plethora of knowledge and wanted to make sure he passed his life experience on to them. They spent years restoring tractors and pulling them in all the fairs. Alan made sure his children knew of their heritage and they spent a great deal of their childhood in New Hampshire on the family land. During this time, they would ride the four wheelers, snowmobiles, and fish on the mountain. Alan was blessed with 10 amazing grandchildren and if you knew him you knew just how proud he was of each and every one of them!
Alan began a second chapter of his life when he courted and married Annie and spent 18 very happy years together. He immediately became the "favorite brother-in-law". Al and Annie were a team who faced life's highs and lows together, always together. Alan welcomed his new grown children Darcy and Evan with love, guidance and openness into his home. He enjoyed the years with Nathan and often said "I love that kid". He again worked hard to provide for and share who he was with his now expanded family. Everything that he was before he was still.
He loved all of his family, his kids, his grandkids, his brother and sisters, his nieces and nephews. Alan loved his mom. They shared the same birthday and celebrated it together. His devotion to his mom taught others how to love and respect your parents. Alan grew up as a protector of his siblings Skip, Mable and Cherrie and loved each one with a depth that cannot be adequately described, and each one owned a part of his heart. Alan's dedication to family, his loyalty to friends, his honesty, grit and strong commitment to responsibility can only begin to reveal who he was. He will be severely missed and forever and lovingly remembered.
In addition to Annie, Alan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Monica Rae and Frank Sistare; his stepchildren, Darcy Madrazo and Evan Madrazo; his grandchildren, Chloe Marshall, Summer Rae Sistare, Kaylee Marshall, Syrus Sistare, Nathaniel Nerkowski, Jillian Marshall, Alan P. Marshall IV, Zachary Marshall, Zeke Sistare and Rayna Julianna Sistare; his brother and sister-in-law, Skip and Cheri Marshall; his sisters, Mable Marshall and Cherrie Cory and her partner Ronn Boyer; father-in-law, Joseph Downey Sr.; sister-in-law Jacky Zuidema and brother-in-law Todd Zuidema; brother-in-law Jae Downey; brother-in-law Joe Downey; brother-in-law Michael Downey; and sister-in-law Catherine Downey; and many talented and accomplished nieces and nephews, extended family members and treasured friends.
As well as his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Ramona Julianna Marshall; and his sons, Alan P. Marshall III and Zachary Ryan Marshall; Ramona's parents Raymond and Betty Jean Jurczak; his mother-in-law Margaret Downey; stepfather Tracy Downes Sr.; stepsister Linda Downes Chillemi; stepbrothers Thomas Downes and Tracy Downes Jr.; and stepmother June Marshall.
Services will be held privately. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home. A graveside service will be announced at a later date.
