Alanis Lynn Smith, age 19, passed away on September 3, 2025. She was born on May 29, 2006, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Chris Smith and Bruna Smith.

Alanis lived life with energy, courage, and joy. In high school, she found passion for wrestling, painting, and playing the violin, but she was always drawn to anything that gave her an adrenaline rush. While attending Weber Basin Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center in Davis County, she found her niche with Wildland Fire Fighting Program there. For two years, she bravely fought wildfires, a role she loved deeply. She loved her role as a USDA Forest Service Wildland Firefighter Apprentice with the Spanish Fork Ranger District on the Uinta Wasatch Cache Forest, as a member of the Initial Attack Squad 81 and Engine 381. Among the many fires she served on, her more recent work included the Willard Peak and Beulah fires in August 2025, and the Unicorn, Clark Hollow, Trout Canyon, and Mount Irish fires in July 2025. She often sent pictures of the fires to her family, proud of the work she was doing. Her squad knew her for her humor- especially when she would rest, sleeping face down in the dirt, only to laugh later at her dusty, dirt-streaked face.

Alanis’s smile was unforgettable- bright, contagious, and able to light up any room. If you were feeling down, Alanis knew exactly how to make you smile or laugh, a quality that came naturally to her.

She is survived by her parents, Chris (Sarah) Smith, Bruna Smith; her siblings, Cecilia Smith, Liam Hudson, and Zion Phitsamay; and many extended family members and friends who loved her.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Millard County Sheriff's Department and Millard County Search and Rescue for their support, dedication, and respect during this time.

A funeral service will be held, Friday, September 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 1585 West 300 South, Syracuse, Utah, 84075.  A visitation for friends and famiy will be held Friday afternoon from 12:45 -1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Wildland Firefighters Foundation through a GoFundMe on behalf of Alanis Smith (or link https://gofund.me/17a5a03e3). Or to the Millard County Search and Rescue through Venmo @WestMillard-SearchRescue.
