Albert (Bert) F. Joseph, 89, died peacefully on August 6, 2024, in Providence, Rhode Island, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the third child born to Romain Joseph and Anna (Monteil) Joseph, and the loving brother of Julia, Catherine, and Teresa, who preceded him in death, and of Margaret Weakly (David Weakly) and Jeanette Vernon (Richard Vernon), both of Arizona.
Albert was the beloved husband for 60 years of Sharon (Gueguen) Joseph. He is survived by his four daughters, Annette Joseph, Amy Joseph (Annie Geissinger), Adriene (Jeff Smith), and Allison McAteer; six grandchildren, Kathleen DaSilva (Andrew DaSilva), Erin Jimenez (Gerson Jimenez), Mary McAteer Schindler (Alex Schindler), Keith McAteer, Luc Mounier, and Brendan McAteer (Danielle Main); and two great-grandchildren, Cayden Goods and Corrina Jimenez. Bert is fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, as well as by brothers-in-law Joseph Ramsey, of Texas, and Michael Broker, and sister-in-law Loretta (Gueguen) Broker of Missouri.
Bert liked to call himself a "diamond in the rough." His children found this the perfect description: keen, diamond-bright, strong, with some rough edges!
Bert was born and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as an Electronics Technician (ET1) on the USS Prairie during what was known then as the Korean Conflict. For his service, he received the China Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Bert received a bachelor's degree at Rockhurst College and a master's degree in mathematics at The University of Kansas (KU). Bert began his career at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, where he participated in the exciting early development of computer systems. He worked for a short time at University Science Center in Philadelphia, then for Allendale Mutual Insurance Company in Rhode Island, where he retired as Vice President of Information Systems.
After retirement, Bert took up a new interest in what he named BioGeometry, creating a "living" or self-sustaining computer program for what he called Triangle Space, combining mathematics, geometry and physics.
In 1988 Bert became a Paw-Paw to his first granddaughter, Kathleen. It was as if he were born to become a grandpa. He often called and asked if Kathleen could come out and play. After he and Sharon retired to Virginia and then to Pennsylvania, he loved it when they would come and stay for a visit. He became Great-Papa to Cayden and Corrina and would light up with joy when he got to spend time with them.
Bert was a longtime supporter of the RI Food Bank and a regular blood donor to the RI Blood Center. In his final years he enjoyed feeding and observing the birds where he lived.
We'd like to express our deep appreciation to the nurses and staff at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center and Greenwich Farms, Warwick, and our gratitude to the Grace Notes Singers, who gently filled the air with song only a few minutes after our father's passing. He will be missed dearly by those he loved and those whose lives he touched.
