ALBERT SAVAGE Obituary

SAVAGE ALBERT JOSEPH SAVAGE Albert (Al) Joseph Savage ended his final round of golf on this earth on August 26, 2018. Upon departing, he immediately checked into Heaven's clubhouse and 19th hole, arriving in time for the celestial Happy Hour, where he, no doubt, cajoled the assembled angelic choir with tall tales of his prowess on the links, taking only brief intermissions to corner Saint Peter to explain how Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles fans have suffered enough. Born August 30th, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, Albert was raised in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and attended Williams high school, graduating in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and served until 1960 as an aircraft mechanic with the 95th Interceptor squadron stationed in Andrews Air Force Base, MD. Following his military service, Al enjoyed a successful vocation in the banking and finance trade and held various positions, ultimately serving as one of First Virginia Bank's Vice Presidents. Cognizant that he should develop a sense of industry in his children, Al inculcated them to the ways of business early on in their lives, exposing them first hand to the many intricacies and joys of automotive repossession when he served as a loan officer. Affable and community oriented, Al was a long-standing member of the Wheaton, Maryland Lions Club, where he chaired several committees and organized a myriad of charitable events. Efficient and popular, Al would ultimately be chosen chapter president. Wrapping up a successful career, Al retired with his wife, Carmela, to Williamsburg, VA where they lived from 1999 to 2016. During these years, Al enjoyed golfing, landscaping, and his family. Ever the environmentalist, it was here that Al honed his surreptitious bottle and can recycling skills ascending to master status. The consummate family man, Al thoroughly relished spending time with his children, as evidenced by his summer excursions to Chincoteague Island, where he exposed them to the joys of seamanship in quasi sea worthy boats, luxurious tent living, and appreciation of fine cuisine in the form of spam grilled on the Coleman camp stove. The goals of these trips for Al were simple - have fun, create memories, and, if possible, return home with the same number of children that he left with. Al is survived by: his wife of 62 years Carmela; three sons, Mark (Lanell), Joseph (Patricia), and Matthew (Dana); two daughters, Margaret (Martin) and Shari (Lawrence); eight grandchildren, Melissa (Cisco), Michael (Megan), Nicholas, Alexandra, Samantha ,Jacob, Shannon, and Luke; and three great grandchildren, Olivia, Brooke, and Emma. While we mourn the passing of Al, we should find solace knowing that he is up there now, carefully selecting river rocks, picking out the perfect shag carpet, and assembling a decorative art collection comprised of incongruous pictures of dogs playing golf and poker, as he builds his place of celebration in preparation for our arrival. The family will hold a viewing Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday August 31, 2018 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, MD. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation in support of The Groves at Kensington Park Retirement Community will be greatly appreciated. http://act.alz.org/goto/kensingtonparkseniorliving. Thankful every day for the friendship that you shared with my Mom and Dad - and for helping me to get my first "real" job working at Maryland National Bank - you will be missed!
