Bloomington - Albert August Schmidt, 90, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully at home on June 9, 2025. He was born December 18, 1934, in Brooklyn to Albert H. and Evelyn Kohut Schmidt. Al lived a long and meaningful life, always dedicated to his family, community, and country.
On May 2, 1964, Al married the love of his life, Barbara Clark, in Kingston. Together, they shared 61 years of marriage, raising two daughters and creating many cherished memories. Al and Barbara settled in Bloomington, where they raised their family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who placed their happiness and well-being at the center of his life.
From 1957 to 1959, Al proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Garrison in Würzburg, Germany. Al was a Life Member of the Bloomington Fire Department with 66 years of service. His lifelong commitment to service and helping others touched the lives of everyone around him.
Al began his career working alongside his father and later held positions with J&J Roofing and IBM. Al was an exceptionally skilled and safe driver - he won a driving contest in his youth and earned a reputation that stayed with him throughout his life. He generously shared his knowledge by teaching many friends and family members how to drive and maintain their vehicles. Al drove 18-wheelers and cement trucks for several local companies before retiring in 1997 from the Teamsters Union Local 445.
Known for his helpfulness and skill, Al was always willing to lend a hand to friends and neighbors. He could fix almost anything and spent many days in his garage repairing cars or working on his home. Al enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and went on many trips and weekend bike events. Al enjoyed the simple pleasures of country life - tending the daily garden, feeding the rabbits in the backyard and always taking pride in looking after family pets, including his much-loved dog, Aaron.
Albert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Clark Schmidt; his daughters, Cynthia Zalondek (Kevin) of Amherst, New Hampshire, and Jennifer Klementis (Shane) of Woodstock, New York; and his grandchildren, Sara, Alex, and Anna Klementis. He is also survived by his brothers, Edward and Paul Schmidt of Kingston, and Walter Schmidt and his wife Joan of Port Charlotte, Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Helen Donnelly and Evelyn Page; his brother-in-law, Cameron Page; and his sister-in-law Lucille Clark Cyr.
Al's warmth, generosity, and dedication to those around him touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5 to 7 PM Thursday June 12 at the George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. His funeral service will be 11 AM Friday June 13 at the funeral home. Rev. Arlene Dawber will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 322 Foxhall Ave., Kingston.
