Albert Joseph Sylvester Sr., affectionately known as Al to his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 17, 2026, in Croydon, Pennsylvania. Born on September 12, 1937, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Al lived a life defined by unwavering kindness, quiet strength, and enduring love for his wife, Mildred (Millie), who was truly the center of his world.
Al and Millie shared a devoted partnership built on love, respect, and hard work. Everything Al did-whether serving his country, working long days, or supporting his community, was done with his family in mind and with Millie by his side. Their bond was evident to all who knew them, and their shared life together stood as a powerful example of commitment and love.
A proud graduate of Delhaas High School, Class of 1954, Al went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Thor as a Bosun 2nd Class. His sense of duty and responsibility followed him throughout his life and into his community service. Al was a lifetime member of the Croydon Firehouse for more than 72 years, dedicating countless hours to serving and protecting others, always putting the needs of his neighbors before his own.
Al's work ethic was legendary and something he intentionally passed down to his children. He worked diligently at Beck Oil and Ice and Meenan Oil before retiring and later opening Sylvester's Deli in Croydon. The deli became more than a business-it was a family endeavor. Al worked every day alongside his beloved wife and their grown children, teaching by example the value of honesty, perseverance, and pride in one's work. His tireless dedication and entrepreneurial spirit left a lasting impression on all who worked with him and those he served.
A devout Christian, Al lived his faith through action rather than words. He was a pillar of his community, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer guidance, or share a story. His kindness and humility drew people to him, and his compassion left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Al was a devoted family man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Matilda Sylvester; his sisters, Kathleen, Mary Litwin; his brother, Fred "Butch" Sylvester; and his cherished wife, Mildred Sylvester, and his granddaughter Jaqueline Sylvester. He is survived by his loving children, Albert (Karen), Donna, Pat (Scott), and April (Dave), who carry forward the values he and Millie instilled in them.
Nothing brought Al greater pride than his family. He was a loving grandfather to Al (Gina); Tim (Sam); Julia (Mark); Scott (Simone); Paul (Megan); David (Justyna); and Jake (Kelly), and a very proud great-grandfather to fourteen great-grandchildren: Peighton, Amelia, Emma, Hudson, Alex, Lilly, Nathan, Mark, Hannah, Sophia, Owen, Neil, Theo, and Lydia.
An avid outdoorsman, Al found joy in hunting, camping, and fishing, and everything Disney, passions matched only by his lifelong devotion to the Philadelphia Phillies. Whether enjoying the quiet of nature or cheering on his favorite team, Al embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude.
Al's life was a testament to hard work, family, faith, and unconditional love, especially the love he shared with Millie and passed on to his children and grandchildren. His presence brought comfort, his laughter brought joy, and his example will continue to guide his family for generations.
As we bid farewell to Albert Joseph Sylvester Sr., we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a love story deeply cherished. He will be forever remembered as a devoted husband, a hardworking provider, and a man who made the world a better place simply by being in it. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with the love of his life, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire.
