Albert Gerald Wehner, Jr.
January 30, 1956 – May 11, 2025
Born on January 30, 1956 in Corona, California, Al spent his early life in California and dreamed of becoming a surfer; he maintained that playful and adventurous personality throughout his life.
In 1964 his family moved to Monroe, his father's home town, where Al attended Monroe High School before leaving to join the Marines following in his father's footsteps. He was stationed in Parris Island, South Carolina and honorably discharged in 1977 at the rank of Corporal.
While in the Marines, Al played tuba in the Parris Island Marine Band, and remained an active tuba player for the rest of his life, playing weekly with the Polish American Concert Band. He particularly enjoyed playing at various festivals in the region, including The Toledo Zoo Music Under the Stars summer concert series.
After the Marines, Al worked as a Machinist at Detroit Stoker where he remained for his entire career until retirement although he still had breakfast with a group of fellow retired friends from work every month.
On August 1st, 1998 Al married his loving wife Rosamaria Alvarez and they built a beautiful life together. They enjoyed fishing, camping, road trips, hosting and visiting family, and spending time together.
He loved music, U of M football, inside jokes, the Tigers, camping, bad movies, pool parties, thrifting for oddities, and spending time with his friends and family. He loved being a grandpa and attending his grandchildren's sporting events, plays and concerts. Community was important to Al, and he played in pool leagues, frisbee contests, and baseball teams, was a member of the Elks Club, the Marine Corp League, United Steelworkers union, and spent many happy times at the Red Noodle Pub. Al could build anything and his family was often amazed to come home and find a newly constructed garage, patio, sunroom, tree house, or doorway.
Al was preceded in death by his beloved parents Grace (Ferber) Wehner and Gunnery Sgt. Albert G. Wehner Sr., and his brother-in-law Bob Dees. He is survived by his wife Rosamaria Wehner of Monroe, and his sisters Pat Dees and Bobbie (Patrick) Kohler both of Monroe. His greatest pride was his family, and he was a loving father to Heather (Pete) Grimley of Milan, MI, Angela (Shawn) Fitzgerald of Whitmore Lake, MI, Chrissy Spencer of Monroe, Bettina (Ernesto Verdeja) Spencer of South Bend, IN, and A.J. Wehner of Monroe. Proud grandfather of Alex Gutierrez-Spencer, Alexis Newhouse, Maya and Lila Grimley, Ava and Liam Fitzgerald, Emma Fitzgerald, Sofia King, Emma Ford, Gracie and Allie Wehner, Elliana Benson, and Cecelia Bastianelli. Excited new great-grandfather to Sincere Hill and upcoming baby Gutierrez-Spencer.
Al passed away on May 11th, and was surrounded by family when God took him home. Semper Fi. Services will be held at Rupp Funeral Home this Saturday May 17th; family and friends may visit beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Donations in his honor can be made to the Marine Corp League or the Monroe High School Band scholarship program.
