Albert Brown Whitmer, Jr., 90, of Oakland, MD, and formerly of Petersburg, WV, passed away on December 8, 2025, at his home. Born on April 3, 1935, in Petersburg, WV, he was the son of the late Albert Brown Whitmer, Sr., and Elsie (Crites) Whitmer.
Albert, a lifelong resident of the Petersburg area, passed away as the last surviving member of his beloved childhood ball team, the Pierpont Polecats. A 1953 valedictorian of Petersburg High School, he attended Potomac State College and was a member of the Potomac Singers. He then earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from West Virginia University. Following college, he served his country in the United States Army before dedicating himself to education as a mathematics teacher at several local high schools. Later, he spent more than 25 years with Western Maryland Consortium until his retirement, after which he generously volunteered for over a decade preparing taxes through the AARP program. A faithful member of Pleasant View Baptist Church for more than 38 years, Albert taught Sunday School and Bible study, sang in the choir, and led worship services at the former Cuppett and Weeks Nursing Home. An avid lover of classical music and opera, he delighted in attending musicals and theater productions, and in his leisure time enjoyed reading mysteries, working crossword puzzles, and playing tennis. Albert's life was defined by service, intellect, faith, and an enduring appreciation for the arts.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Kitzmiller) Whitmer; his son, Michael Paul Whitmer; sisters in law, Helen Whitmer, Karen Kitzmiller, Shirley Kitzmiller; a nephew, Jason Kitzmiller and wife Tonya; and a niece, Tammy Western and husband Andy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Whitmer, and two brothers-in-law, Owen and Gary Kitzmiller.
Friends will be received on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 11 AM to 1 PM, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church. A funeral service with military honors will be held at 1 PM with Pastor Wally Weeks officiating. A bereavement meal will be provided immediately following the service. Interment will be privately held at the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ruth Enlow Library, Pleasant View Baptist Church or charity of donor's choice.
The Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel is honored to be serving the Whitmer family.
