Alegria Locher Horton, passed away on June 18, 2022 due to complications from COVID 19. She was 81 years old. Alegria Locher Horton, nicknamed "Millie", was born August 8, 1940 in northern Phillipines. She was adopted at an early age. She married William P. Locher, USN, and of this union, William P. Locher and Aaron C. Locher were born. Millie was very proud of her boys. They graduated from Florida State University with engineering degrees. Aaron joined the Marines and went through pilot training, later becoming a helicopter pilot. Bill was recruited on campus by General Motors.
Millie liked to tell the story of the first time she came to American soil. She first visited Anchorage Alaska, and she refused to get off the plane as it was snowing and very cold. The untold story is that she was 9 months pregnant with Bill. They refueled the plane with her still inside it. She was married to her first husband for 15 years. She met her current husband in Milton Florida. Ken was in the Air Force Reserves and Millie always made sure his uniforms were impeccable. She worked at Whiting Field Officers club in Milton, Florida as a cook for ten years from 1981 until 1991. She was greatly loved by the young aviation student pilots. Millie loved to cook Filipino food, from Chicken Adobe to Lumpia and pancit. She could grill a steak with the best cooks.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Kenneth V. Horton, Ken's brother, Doug Horton and wife Betty, her sister, Francesca Brewer of Milton Florida, and her grandchildren, Rachel who is the daughter of her daughter Stephanie, an instruction specialist. Rachel is a rising junior at UWF studying Marine Biology. Her other grandchildren are Emma and Ryan, children of Aaron and Amber Locher of New Orleans, Louisiana. Millie's passion in life were her children and grandchildren.
Millie loved to fish and never threw one back, no matter how small. Millie loved to go to garage and yard sales. She was an excellent bargainer. Rarely paying the asking price. This was her hobby, besides fishing. Her real expertise was in gardening. She had an incredible green thumb and could grow tropical fruit trees that normally would not thrive in our area. She has 3O-year-old white grapefruit trees, numerous orange trees and Fuyu persimmon trees. She is very proud of her Philippine Moringa (malunggay) trees. She picks the leaves and removes them from branches and she uses them in various Filipino dishes. She will truly be missed by all who knew her. She was one of a kind. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27 at 11:00 AM at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South, with visitation Saturday, June 25 at 5pm-7pm. Committal service to follow at Barrancas National Cemetery. Faith Chapel Funeral Home South, 100 Beverly Parkway is entrusted with arrangements. You may express condolences online at www.fcfhs.com
