Alex De La Cruz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2024.
Alex De La Cruz was born on February 18, 1950, and took his last breath on November 11, 2024. He was born and raised in San Marcos, Texas, a community he called home throughout his life.

Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Tabita "Tabby" De La Cruz; his two children, Rene De La Cruz (Trista De La Cruz) and Evelyn Urbizu (Eddie Urbizu); and his four cherished grandchildren, Edward Urbizu, Alyssa De La Cruz, Elijah Urbizu, and Antonio De La Cruz. He is also survived by his siblings, Albert De La Cruz (Chavela) and Debra De La Cruz (James); brother-in-law Abel Gomez (Armida); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Miguel and Lydia De La Cruz and Mateo and Donisa Rodriguez; his parents, Alex and Amelia De La Cruz; his siblings, Joann, Rick, Diana, and Armando; nephews Lupe Herrera III, Gabriel Urrutia, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Alex grew up in San Marcos, where he shared a lively and joyful childhood with his siblings and cousins, often playing between their family home and their grandmother's house. As he grew older, he developed a deep love for music and cars, driving a 1967 Mustang and playing drums in a band called The Konviks in 1967 alongside close friends.

Alex began working at Sunset Lanes in 1966, dedicating over two decades to maintaining lane equipment and other operational needs until his retirement in 1992. His expertise was also sought after in bowling centers in Seguin and New Braunfels. In 1991, Alex joined his brother-in-law Abel in establishing Abel's Diner, where he supported operations until health issues prompted his full retirement. His contributions spanned kitchen management, inventory, and front- of-house operations, demonstrating his hardworking and reliable nature.

A dedicated member of El Buen Pastor Methodist Church for many decades, Alex served in numerous roles, including treasurer, men's group leader, Sunday school teacher, and organizer of the church's annual Lenten Fish Fry. His faith was an integral part of his life and a source of strength for his family and

community.

Alex will be remembered as a kind, hardworking man with an incredible gift for making others smile. He deeply loved his wife, Tabby, often showering her with flowers and gifts on birthdays, anniversaries, and sometimes "just because." Together, they enjoyed 55 years of marriage, dancing, dining out, and celebrating life with family and friends.

He showed the same devotion to his children, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and especially his grandchildren, attending their events and making every Christmas, Easter, and birthday special. Alex was a pillar in his family and community, known for his generosity and willingness to help anyone in need.

His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at El Buen Pastor Methodist Church, 209 E Grove St., San Marcos, TX, 78666.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to El Buen Pastor UMC.

Alex was such a great guy. I always looked forward to when we worked the same shifts at the Diner. He, along with Rene and Abel, showed me from the get go what good, hard working servant leaders look like. He had the best smile, and he had such a kind spirit.

Something I learned about Tio Alex hard work, kindness, patience & love! Ever since I've known him from when I was a teenager he had been a hard worker. He has always shown kindness towards me & others. Had patience for me when I was going through trials of life. The last important gesture is Love. Alex & Tabby have always opened their door to me when I came to visit San Marcos. Always showed me love through his actions & words. Will dearly miss & never forget Tio Alex. Love & Prayers for the family!

Alex was a very faithful servant to his church and his family. He was always willing to help and went the extra mile to ensure that things were done right. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May God's peace be with his family in this time of sorrow and loss.
