Alexander Denham Estill

Alexander Denham Estill, 93, of Mt Pleasant, SC, husband of Barbara Ann Breerwood, entered into his eternal rest on May 10, 2025. Al and Barbara were married for 69 years.

Al was born on December 16, 1931, in Washington, DC to the late Alexander Denham Estill, Sr and Mildred Pauline Bowey. He graduated from Hyattsville High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Air Force later that year. He was stationed in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of SSgt. After being honorably discharged on September 1, 1952, Al started his career at the National Security Agency, first at Arlington Hall and then, for the rest of his career, at Ft Meade. During his career he traveled to many countries throughout the world. He and the family lived in Ankara, Turkey from 1966 to 1968.

Early in his post USAF career he enrolled in college, attending night school first at George Washington University and later at the University of Maryland. He graduated in 1964 with a business degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, MD.

Al felt the Lord’s call on his life at a young age when his family attended Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, DC. He continued to grow in his faith throughout his lifetime, attending Riverdale Presbyterian Church, where he and Barbara were married. For a short time in the late seventies, he attended Landover Hills Baptist Church.

Al enjoyed raising rabbits as a young boy in Riverdale and loved his dog, Root Beer. He was a Boy Scout as a kid, attaining the rank of Life Scout and later became a Boy Scout Leader as a young adult. He was a good first basemen on his baseball teams and he loved to follow the Washington baseball teams, often referring to the Washington Nationals as the “Senators”.

Al was an avid gardener, becoming a Master Gardener after he retired. Additionally, he was an avid fisherman and loved to go crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay. As a retiree, he spent many hours volunteering as a Trustee and Elder at Riverdale Presbyterian Church.

Family was very important to Al, both the relationships with his family and in his family history. He took great interest in the Estill family history and enjoyed researching details that were previously unknown to him. His research resulted in him joining the Sons of the American Revolution, the First Families of Monmouth County, New Jersey, and the Sons of the Confederacy.

Al is survived by his daughter, Karen E. Young (Charles); daughter-in-law, Carol Yapur Estill; his sister, Dolores Estill Joyner, six grandchildren: Chip (Rebecca) Young, Kirsten (Mark) Rollings; Robert (Amber) Rolfes; Ashley Estill (Patrick Pervola), Alex (Samantha) Estill, Danielle (Thomas) MacNeil, eleven great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Breerwood and son, Kenneth D Estill.

Pallbearers will be: Robert Rolfes, Chip Young, Mark Rollings, Alex Estill, Thomas MacNeil and Patrick Pervola.

A celebration of life will be held at Gasch’s Funeral Home in Hyattsville, MD on Saturday, May 24th at 10 am. A graveside service and internment will follow at 1:30 pm at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD.
