Bob Pieri, Emeritus Professor Mechanical Engineering, NDSU
February 3, 2023
I morn the loss of Alex to his family, community and the engineering profession. I was the professor for the first Intro to Engineering course that Alex took 4 or 5 years ago. He was OK in it, struggling sometimes but showing enthusiasm nearly all the time. He had to go away for a while, but he wrote me & said he really liked the Engineering material and he was going to get back to it somehow. About 4 months ago I ran into him at a Friday Engineering meeting at SBC. I didn't recognize him at first, heseemed to have matured and become more comfortable with himself. He was back into Engineering classes and was excited about the future. I was happy for him and saw in his eyes that he wanted this & was determined to finish. I was gratified & excited for him.
When one losses a student, a teacher will mourn the loss of the individual but they will also mourn the loss of opportunity. There was much loss with Alex crossing over.

I met Alex this summer while at UND and was instantly impressed with his enthusiasm for learning and the great questions and respect he had for our hosts. He was a great student and person, and the world is a bit dimmer without him in it. Prayers for his journey, for his children, loved ones, and family.
