Alexander P. Smith, of Arlington, Massachusetts, formerly of Fredonia, New York died on Saturday, March 23, 2024. He was 32 years of age.
He had many nicknames throughout his life, so perhaps you knew him as Al, Little Al, Uncle Al, Alex, Bucko, Smitty, or even Peter. Each nickname stems from a different era of his life - from his days at Fredonia High School and Niagara University, his decade spent running high-end luxury hotels, or his newfound career in clinical trials software - the title he was most proud to live up to was the PreK Superlative given to him of “Future Talk Show Host.” No matter when or where you knew him, you knew him as the man who could make anyone feel welcome, the friend who would drop anything to help you, the person who would set aside five hours at a time for a phone call just to hear your voice, and truly that one individual in your life who was unapologetically himself.
He never hesitated to sing at the top of his lungs, to dance with a ridiculous amount of confidence, to remember people’s wine orders better than they did, and to stand by the Buffalo Bills against all odds. He was also a gaming nerd, a movie buff, a music lover, a trivia master, a storyteller… He made an instant impact on anyone he met. He connected to people effortlessly, creating a party wherever he went. Al was an incredibly dedicated friend, an empathic and genuinely curious listener, a patient partner, and an advocate for anyone who needed someone on their side.
He viewed his family time as sacred, he deeply cherished his friendships, and he valued his chosen family above all else. Once you were considered to be a part of that, he loved you with an unquestionable loyalty. To be connected with Al, you were met with constant support, unconditional love, an unmatched thoughtfulness, and a warmth that is impossible to describe. His heart had room for everyone who entered his life. He was adored by all who he crossed paths with, and the beloved stories of him extend well beyond those who had the honor to meet him.
Alex is the beloved son of Stephen Smith and Helen Riggin Smith. He is the loving partner of Caitlin Pilette. Alex is the cherished nephew of Katherine Larsen, Lucinda Riggin Jay, Laurence Riggin, Paul Jay, and Betsy Smith. Dear cousin of Simon & Emma Jay, Emily & “Big Al” Aguirre, and Corinna Jay. Best friend of Alex Phelka and Michael Abbate. Grandson of the late Harriet and Jack Smith and Howard and Margaret Riggin.
At the request of the family, services will be privately held at this time. We extend our sincerest gratitude to all who share their condolences and sentiments of support. In lieu of flowers and cards, donations to the following organizations and fundraisers can be made in Al’s honor, as they are two causes he felt proud to represent:

Donate to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center

Donate to The Children's Room - Caring Grief Support for Children, Teens, & Families
