Alton "Al" Smith, 78, of Bowie peacefully passed from this earth on July 29, 2025.
Funeral Service is 10:00 AM Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
Affectionately known to many in town as “Honest Al the Working Man’s Pal,” Al Smith never met a stranger and was always ready to make a deal. He was born on July 15, 1947. After graduating from Greenfield High School in 1965, he entered the Air Force. He met his future wife Judy at the Whispering Wheels skating rink and they were married on April 30, 1966. Later Al and Judy had two children and returned in 1980 to make Decatur their family’s home. Al was a computer technician, policeman, fireman, arson investigator, car salesman, and pilot escort driver. He eventually and begrudgingly retired in 2018. After that he loved dancing and The Cowboys, watching every other sport all the time, enjoying time with his grandkids and great grand baby while celebrating 46 years of sobriety.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Judy Kay Brown Smith; father Roy Smith, his mother Beverly Lyons Smith Lee; and his brother, Larry Smith and wife Caroline.
Al is survived by daughter Shannon Smith-Green of Lake Bridgeport; son Sean Smith and Carter Covington, of Los Angeles, CA; beautiful granddaughter Hailey Green of Azle and "fearless" grandson Cormac Covington-Smith of Los Angeles; great granddaughter Elliana Long of Azle, Sisters Wanda Burkhardt and husband Gaylon of Denton, Drucilla Smith of New Brighton, MN and Denice Lucente and husband Bill of Waukesha WI, along with his favorite dance partner Geraldine Shadburn of Bowie and many loving extended family members and more friends than you can shake a stick at.
In lieu of flowers, please make charitable donations in his name to the Wise County Veterans Group or to Alcoholics Anonymous.
