Alfonso G Calub

Alfonso Calub was born on August 1, 1938, in the Aringay, La Union Philippines. He graduated with a B.S. in agriculture from The University of the Philippines in Los Banos Laguna in 1960. He pursued his graduate studies in New Hampshire, where he obtained his PhD and his post doctorate degree in Lincoln, Nebraska.
As a plant breeder, he worked on ornamental breeding and produced several varieties of Mussaenda which he named after Queen Sirikit of Thailand. He worked as a rice breeder in various companies and produced three patents on hybrid rice.
In connection with his work on hybrid rice, he was invited to speak in symposiums in America, China and Thailand.
He loved to garden in his own yard and travel with his family. Al and Laura also enjoyed cruising.
After retiring as a Plant Breeder, he was an adjunct professor at Houston Community College teaching Biology and Botany.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, of 58 years and one brother in California: his children Janice and her husband Gary Campbell, daughter Florence, and grandchildren Kyla and her husband Michael White, Jordyn and Trent.
